“Good rooms, poor breakfast”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 3, 2012

We asked to be on a high floor and they did put us on the highest floor possible. The rooms were dated but nice and big with a seperate sitting area and fridge, sink etc.
Bathroom was a good size and nice toileteries. Bed was comfortable and there was a good view. Breakfast buffet was a very low standard. You could get an omlette made for you which was good, but the buffet had such a poor selection of hot food and cereal and off fruit.

We recently spent two nights at the Embassy in Seaside and left feeling impressed by some aspects of our stay -- and very disappointed by others.

Pros:
* Free breakfast. The free breakfast at the Embassy Suites was absolutely fantastic. The selection included fruit (watermelon, pineapple, and cantaloupe), eggs, yogurt, fried potatoes, sausage, bacon, pancakes, cereal, oatmeal, and baked goods. The real star of the show, however, was the omelet bar, where omelets (and plain eggs) were cooked to order. The wait in the omelet line, however, was 5-10 minutes.
* Common areas. The facilities themselves are impressive; a 12-story atrium fills the center of the hotel, with the rooms arranged on the outside. Outside of the breakfast area during breakfast time, there was plenty of space to sit and talk with friends. Because of the atrium architecture, however, the sound does carry.
* Location. The Embassy Suites is within easy walking distance to a McDonald's, a Starbucks, and a Chili's, and is a short drive from attractions like the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Dennis the Menace Park.

Cons:
* Dampness. We arrived shortly before sunset on a day that was chilly, overcast, and misty (at least near the ocean -- we could see where the clouds disappeared further inland), and a pervasive feeling of dampness filled the hotel. The carpets in the room were slightly soggy and the air was extremely humid. It didn't help that the common areas of the hotel were freezing -- perhaps a side effect of the atrium architecture. The next two days were sunnier and warmer, and conditions inside improved a little, but the feeling of dampness never left.
* Shower water pressure. The shower water pressure was the worst that I've experienced at any hotel. There was plenty of water pressure through the bathtub tap, but once you switched from tap to shower, the water sort of weakly misted around you. Very disappointing when you're already a bit cold and uncomfortable.
* Prices. We paid a little more than $200/night for a king bedroom suite. For what you're getting, this is one expensive hotel.

Many other things about the Embassy Suites were acceptable. The rooms were an ok size and clean enough, if you ignored a few deep-set stains; the pool was a hit with the kids; and service was reasonably responsive, if not particularly friendly (I should point out that there was some excellent service from the breakfast staff).

We didn't have a bad stay and could be persuaded to stay here again, but there are definitely more economical options in the area. I would suggest two quick fixes that would have bumped my review up a star: (1) offer free coffee/tea in the lobby area -- a hot drink would have helped relieve a bit of the chill, and since there's already coffee/tea bags in the rooms, you're just making this amenity more easily-accessible to guests; and (2) fix the shower water pressure issue -- I know you're saving water and money with the low-pressure shower head, but there's low pressure and no pressure, and you're falling dangerously close to the latter.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for sharing your comments in regards to your stay with us. Please know we are preparing to renovate our bathtubs and shower heads this year as well as the case goods. In particular, your comments in regards to complimentary coffee in the evening is a wonderful idea considering the often rapid temperature change as mentioned. Thank you for staying with us and we hope to see you again in the future.
Sincerely,
Myron M.

Though a little pricy ($250+ on a Monday night) we feel like we got our money's worth. The check in process was easy, and they gave us a little extra treat for being Hilton Honors members. A gigantic tour bus pulled in just ahead of us, but there was no chaos checking in - just a slight delay for the elevator. The manager's reception was well timed (5:30-7:30) so we were able to take full advantage of all the drinks. The snacks were varied, this night they included chips, crackers, popcorn, and at least 2 types of dip. The breakfast was also delicious, all the usual Embassy Suites fare. The kids enjoyed swimming in the pool as well. We love to stay here when we come to Monterey. The 10-15 minute drive to the aquarium is easy and its only 5 minutes or less to Dennis the Menace Park. The kids love that you can see Embassy Suites from the Aquarium, when you look across the bay. One time we drove across the street from the hotel and hung out at the beach. Of course, we had to wear jackets, but it was beautiful.

There's a lot to like about this hotel.

The rooms are a good size, with a combined living/dining area and a separate bedroom. They are pretty well appointed and have the usual things that you would expect in this sort of a "suite" hotel, including a fair sized bathroom and kitchenette-like facilities.

I was on a high floor and it seemed quiet enough, I certainly had no outside disturbance when sleeping.

A free Manager's drinks reception for a couple of hours in the evening helps lighten the evening mood and, the next morning, there's a decent enough breakfast with omelettes made to order. I didn't have any queue-type problems with either although I see how, in really busy periods, there may be.

In between, there are the usual facilities you might expect.

The food in the restaurant was nice without being anything special. But I mean that in a good way and the service was good.

I didn't use the pool or gym.

WiFi was slow (they charge, but it is free for some through Hilton Honours status).

I stayed during a busy period and most things seemed to work OK for me. I had to wait a little time for an elevator at the usual busy periods, but I didn't find it to be to the point of being irritating.

Car parking is free and plentiful. But you will be parked a way away if you are staying there at a busy time and return late..

It's probably due a bit of a refresh in some areas, to be honest, and I found myself wishing it was a little more bright and breezy visually, but, you know, it's not tired and it's no big deal.. there are many, many worse and more expensive places to stay.

Its location was fine for me but those wanting a hotel in Monterey may ned to consider that it is not in Monterey, but near Monterey.

Of the option Hilton brands in the area, my first choice, having stayed in both, would probably be the Garden Inn, but that is not to detract from the Embassy Suites and for others it may very well be the other way around. I would certainly not hesitate to stay here again if the need arose.

Plenty of free parking and easy access make this hotel a good place to stay. Nothing "over the top" but nothing terribly overwhelming, either. The staff was congenial and seemed genuinely interested in making our stay comfortable.

Fortunately, the lobby has a gift shop that offers Starbucks as the Embassy Suites Coffee is that horrible Nescafe "machine instant" stuff that Disney likes to serve.

Should the need arise I'd stay here again.

We have stayed in Embassy Suites across the USA. We book knowing to to expect and are never disappointed. The hotel was easy to find - we did not use our sat nav. There is plenty of parking outside.
We booked this hotel are we were touring this part of the USA.
I had trouble using my Hilton Honors card on arrival, but the check-in staff contacted the Hilton Honors team and had it sorted for me in minutes.
The room and amenities were as good as any Embassy Suites we have stayed in. We ate in the onsite restaurant - think it was called Pacific Cafe, and the food was fine.
The evening happy hour was well organised and apart from an occasional queue to be served, was very good.
I note that previous reviewers baulk at the cost of wifi - and I share that view. I cannot see that it costs $3 per device to province wifi and does now seem to be a basic amenity. Although to be fair, we stayed at two other good hotels in LA, and they both charged to use wifi.
If I had a criticism is that the breakfasts never seemed to be hot. Even though the serving dishes were brought from the kitchen they were, at best, luke warm.
We drove to Monterey via route 101 from LA and returned via the Pacific Coast Highway. It transpires we chose the right routes. If you drive up the coast from LA, the passenger is facing the cliffs, not the sea, so the not only miss the vies but also increase the risks of car sicknesses. We did not know that, a local in San Simeon told us that when we stopped for a coffee.
In all, a good stay, well located, good staff, comfortable room, near the sea. Great fish restaurants nearby. If you go to Cannery Row, use the free 'trollies' to sight-see. The one to Pacific Grove showed us some spectacular coast-line. Really too good to miss. Also, while in Cannery Row, choose your parking carefully. We found somewhere that charged $8 a day, and allowed us to come back that evening when we went to Bubba Gump for dinner. We asked first and our parking ticket was marked to allow the return trip.

I enjoyed staying here for a work trip. The room was a nice place to stay after a long day. I had lots of room to relax and the reception in the evening was a nice diversion. The included breakfast was very good too.
