Couldn't find a listing for the Sausalito Ferry so there is a possibility this is in the wrong place, if so I apologise, however:
We cycled from San Francisco to Sausalito and with the intention of cycling back. Although when we arrived and had eaten and relaxed stumbled accross the Sausalito Ferry. We paid for two tickets priced at around $10 dollars each before realising the queue to take a bike on was going all the way around the corner. We were informed if you went to the kiosk early in the day you could pick up a casino chip which would be used to reserve you a space on the ferry, after they are gone it's first come first served for bikes. Due to the ferry company trying to get each ferry to leave on time they only took a handful of bikes on each boat, we ended up waiting around 2-3 hours to get our bikes back on the ferry when the company eventually decided to let everyone on as it was so close to the end of the day. If I ever attempt the ferry again it would be as a foot passenger or I would make sure I had a reservation via one of the chips. You certainly live and learn but this company seriously needs to do something better. (Considering their ferry's have the facilities to store several bikes.) Even when they did let everyone on there was still plenty of seating on board.
