“Huge 3D Topographic Map”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

Great spot for those interested in the San Francisco Bay Area's geography and the history of Sausalito. As my office is 1/4 mile away, I'll often take out of town visitors there while on a lunchtime walk.

It's a bit old fashioned, but nonetheless interesting. What is remarkable is a small exhibit on the history of the creation and building of the Marin Shipyards during World War II, and how in a very short time ground was assembled, railroad tracks laid, buildings and shipyards created, and a huge number of Liberty Ships created to support the war effort.

If the current Sausalito town government was in charge back in the 1940s we could have lost the War, as it takes months to do a simple alteration in an office....... Clearly what was done would have taken decades, so here we also have an a example of what can be done quickly if and when the need arises.

“Required nerd vacation spot”

Super-cool and informative model of the San Francisco bays. A fun (and free!) must stop for people who like a little science in their vacations.

“Everyone should see this!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2013

The history behind the model itself and how it was used is an education. Standing there seeing the whole Bay Area mapped out, with water flowing in accordance with the tides is perhaps too low-tech for some but really worthwhile. It put's the whole area in perspective - literally!

“Facinating bird's eye view of the Bay Area”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2013

I like things that are well made...and this took a lot of craftsmen a lot of time to build! HEY! If you are new to SF visit the Bay Model and you will understand very quickly how the cities are laid out. #1, if your somewhat organized about where you want to go - this is the coolest map in the country! And, you'll get a bird's view of where things are. If you like maps & models, this is for you. It is intricately made with enough detail and description to educate you for hours, or stroll through all the buildings during 3 cups of Joe while the kids entertain themselves for hours: there’s a lot for kids. OK, here's a fun-fact for adults: the Bay Model is built on 286, 5-ton slabs of concrete that are about 8’ square. This is to ensure accurate level and stability for the hydraulic testing and research of how water flows through the bay. Closed on Mondays.

“See the Whole Bay Area in a Day”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2013

Very cool way to see the Bay Area. There are small replicas of the local bridges, and it imitates tidal flows. There are guides to each area of the model that will tell you about what you are looking at, and various other fun facts. Great for those who are interested in ecosystems, and local bay ecology. Run by Army Corp of Engineers. This is also the site for the Sausalito Art Festival every Labor Day.
