Having one in our own backyard (in Laguna Beach) we wanted to visit a sister center & we're glad we did. The view and area is very beautiful, but this one is very different from "ours" in that you cannot see many of the mammals (since they are recovering from illnesses and trauma). But they have great educational tools on site and it is a perfect place for school aged children to learn about these beautiful sea creatures & the dangers they face in the wild from other ocean inhabitants and humans alike.

To echo previous reviews the work these people (volunteers) do to help sick and injured animals is amazing. (It was also advice from the MMC that also lead to the Pier 39 sea loin landings). While there were not many animals there when we visited, the audio tour was very informative and the view of the sea from the upper level of the center was breathtaking.

Advice that I would offer for future visitors is that if you are not bringing your own car make sure to schedule your transportation carefully. The center is quite remote. We were on a cruise that stopped in SF. We hopped on a ferry to Sausalito (very enjoyable and affordable!). We looked up top things to do on trip advisor and the MMC is #1. We got a cab downtown and road construction was a real obstacle. As another reviewed said the traffic is only one way at a time. We ended up paying an extra 15 mins of waiting time. No big deal…we were on vacation.

The worst part was trying to arrange for a ride back downtown from the MMC. My husband called 3 cab companies who all told us the same thing--- the center was outside of their service area. At this point I started to get a bit concerned because the five miles between the center and downtown is NOT walkable. Even if we had rented bikes downtown the terrain was not suitable for riding (its mountainous and we saw many cyclists walking their bikes at some lower parts of bunker road.) I really could have kicked myself for not getting the number of the cabby who dropped us off so he could pick us up!

We were lucky and found a co-op cab company that had a driver willing to come out and pick us up. Another tip… he took us a different way down the mountain to avoid the construction on bunker road and the views of the golden gate were so beautiful!

The bottom line—The Marine Mammal Center is absolutely worth your time. Even if there aren’t many animals there when you visit the views alone are worth it and you’ll be supporting a GREAT organization. Expect to spend 1-3 hours here depending on your interest in marine mammals and veterinary science. (longer if you have small children or if they have many animals there during your visit.)

The first thing the man at the info desk told us was "This is a hospital, there are no animal shows". We knew that going in, but I still thought there would be more to see. There wasn't a docent-led tour available when we were there so we walked around and read the handout and the displays. They had released six animals that morning (YAY!) and they said there were fewer animals there than normal; we could see two of them from the viewing area.

Though we didn't see much, the work these people are doing is phenomenal! We happily made purchases at the Gift Shop and made an additional donation on top of that.

Getting there was quite challenging because there was road construction and only one direction of cars could go at a time. After leaving the center we drove down to the beach and then further up into the mountains for some great views of SF.

Time your visit to coincide with the docent-led tour - well worth the small fee and a much richer experience than the free self-guided tour. And you can feel good about it since the fees go to support the wonderful work of this humane institution. So do the proceeds from the gift shop, so pick up a souvenier!
