“Awful Awful Awful”
Reviewed December 25, 2008

The hotel was obviously empty, but we were given a room with a view of a service road. It was too hot in the room, even when we tried to turn off all the heaters. The "fireplace" advertised was a separate stove fixture. Our room was cleaned at 3:30, only after we called housekeeping. The food at the restaurant was delicious, but an entree was the size of a walnut.
We were so disappointed at this holiday visit and want to warn others that if you do go, don't expect a view with their lowest rate, and even if they are not full, you won't get moved.
We generally stay in San Francisco and that is what we will do from now on!

Sandra we are so apologetic about your experience! As I am not clear that you specifically asked for an upgrade, I will remind everyone that you are welcome to ask for one at check in. Often times we will do so free of charge. We, of course, would like to put our best foot forward… so whenever we are able to upgrade we would do so. Often there will be a minimal rate difference, but it depends on your preference, of course. Many people simply choose to book the lowest rate.

What’s more, it is often that people book those specific rooms as they are also pup friendly, and markedly easy to get to your car (without having to valet). They *are* a great value, but they don’t have the view some of our other rooms have.

The historic radiators have tricky valves, but it is our pleasure to come and solve the situation had engineering been informed about the issue. In fact, don’t hesitate to contact us at the hotel or just email me, and we will see what we can do to rectify the situation after the fact. Albeit a bit late, we are always looking to please and to learn!

Never hesitate to approach management while at the hotel as it is patently obvious we would prefer you happy than unhappy. We are obviously keen on solving the situation prior to your exit, and frankly would prefer to resolve any potential miscommunication before you check in!

We remind everyone to talk to our staff, ask for a manager, and never hesitate to let us know if there is an unexpected issue. Apologies again, and don’t hesitate to contact us in regards to your previous stay! We would love the chance to make it right!

Sincerely
Michael H.

there is perhaps no better view of San Francisco unless you were an inmate on Pelican Island (Alcatraz). From my super luxurious bed within the meticulously restored century old military officers quarters, I could see the lights of San Fran and behold the majesty of the Golden gate bridge, all neatly framed by vintage pines. It is hard to say enough about this visionary use of Fort Baker, the setting is peaceful and beautiful. The grounds are sprawling and lush. The building, dining room, bar and spa are world class, as is the fare, the service and the artwork.

Everything about this experience reeks priviledge, casual elegance, and quality. Turn on the gas fireplace (wood is not allowed per National Park Service) and turn the lights down. Let the glow of the fire and lights of the city lull you into your nights rest so that you can explore all of the amazing natural wonders surrounding this jewel.

Just spent another night at Cavallo Point in Marin and contiue to think this is just a unique and wonderful change from the downtown hotels in San Francisco city.
The spa is sized perfectly and the therapists are so well prepared for their job.
Loved the restaurant as well and Farley's bar is just a real Marin gathering spot.

Overall OK, staff very nice but unprofessional. Stayed in one of the new rooms, view of GG Bridge was wonderful, room very nice except that there was a mechanical closet on the other side of the wall the bed was on, so everything hummed, bed even vibrated! Think it was #1401, but might have same issue in other rooms. At check out desk person agreed it was a bad room, she didn't understand why we were put there. Said some people that "must be heavy sleepers" apparently were able to stay in that room. ??? All the staff seemed to mean well, but most lacked level of professionalism expected at a higher end hotel. Example: Restaurant supposed to be open till 10am for breakfast, at 9:55 it was closed, but they let us in anyway which was nice. However, there was almost no food left...no one told us, we just thought it a really terrible brunch. Not even any OJ! We found out when the waiter brought us our bill and he said he didn't charge us the full price since there wasn't much left. When I filled out the email survey they sent, outlining these and a number of other issues, the Manager did call, but seemed more upset that the desk person admitted that there were problems with the room, rather than actually caring about our marginal experience, and never even mentioned any of the other problems. We live an hour away and stay in SF area hotels often, which I told him, so you would think he might want to get us to come back, but really only seemed to care that the desk person admitted it was a bad room. Bottom line, lots of little things made the stay only "OK" but not up to standards they claim and rates they charge. But stay out of #1401 and give them a year to train their staff, or if you can get a great deal and don't expect more than 3 star staff, go and enjoy the place. Spa was good.

My husband just got home after spending 2 nights at Cavallo Point. The location is to die for...we were in the cheap room ($300 per night) and had an incredible view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Our room was their modern/contemporary room, as opposed to the historic room. The only problem with the modern rooms in that it's quite an uphill hike from the lobby and restaurant, so if you want to take advantage of the complimentary coffee, you have to hike uphill back to your room, coffee in hand.

The decor was impressive, if you're into organic, eco-friendly stuff (which I am, my husband doesn't care about it). The ceilings, cabinet and beds are bamboo, all natural materials used throughout, gas fireplace heat, heated floors, organic teas in the room. My only complaint about the room itself is that the comforters are down alternative, so they don't breathe. I got pretty hot underneath and too cold when I kicked off the comforter. I'm a down kind of person, which is cooler to sleep under. No detail is overlooked. We only ate one meal in the hotel, breakfast. It was a wonderful buffet, at $18 per person. Also, the rooms each have a 32" plasma tv.

The staff means well, but they don't have it dialed in yet. They have only been open since June 2008. They all seem to have great attitudes, just run into glitches on occassion. The concierge, Nancy, is awesome. She can do what can't be done. They also offer complimentary yoga and pilates. We attended the cooking class (very pricey and not that great)....don't know if I would do it again, but the idea of it is nice.

All in all, it was a pleasant stay and much more beautiful than the places in town.

It all started out so well.. the lovely drive into the property, the stunning views, the check in and room amenities were heaven. But our company booked several rooms and then the trouble started. Rooms were not ready, switched or unavailable. The real disaster happened at dinner, using the catering to host a private dinner in one of the reception rooms. The bar staff could not make a cocktail to save their life, the wine came half way through the meal. All food was in bad shape, and this was nearly $200 per person. Afterward some from our group ordered room service to fill in for what was supposed to be a dinner and the food came 30-40 minutes later, cold, melted or otherwise still unedible. I did hear that as long as you stay in the bar and order drinks there, or eat directly in the main restaurant, you're ok. The staff seemed poorly trained, though friendly enough. The spa I thought was so-so, the 'healing center' seems like just some marketing speak for your basic hot tub, wet sauna, and massage services. One can overlook some things but all said and done it will run you nearly $450 per night. Throw in the strange taxes and fees and the valet parking and it's easily $500/night. And unless you really take advantage of all the walking to be done around the property and in the hills above the golden gate bridge, there turns out not to be much reason for staying there. My recommendation.. stay in Sausalito and have dinner and drinks at CavalloPoint. Nothing else at this hotel delivers.

We stayed at the resort for our anniversary. We chose it for the spa, accomodations, and resturants. A great location with proximity to wine country and the city.

Our first night was in a historic room next the main building. Beautiful inside with a great bed. We loved it, except for the car doors opening and closing in the am. Too early for us, so we asked to be moved. They moved us to a quiet contemporary room while we were in wine country. The new room was great, more our style and very quiet. The fog horn really did not impact us and i am kind of a freak about noise.

We had dinner at Murray Circle two nights. What a fabulous experience, fantastic food and staggering wine list. The resturant just recieved a Michelin star and Dan, the wine guy, put together two wines for the first night and wine with the tasting menu, all were very good to great.

You must dine at Murray Circle.

We also had appetizers at the bar and room service. The bar food was very good, but limited. The room service food was great, quick and hot. Just basics, but perfect for us on that particular night, we just couldn't eat a heavy meal 3 nights in a row.

The spa was more than I expected. My wife loved it with treatments over two days. My spa experience is limited, but it was better than the Penisula in Chicago. We both did acupuncture, couples massage, and couples soak. My wife also had a wrap and scrub.

The resort has a great location with all the amenties of a luxury lodge. We will be back soon.
