“Disappointing room and low value”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2013

We are family of four (2 adults, 2 boys) and we booked "Historic 2 bedroom cottage" but we were not told it was up 6 flights of stairs (no lifts) and not great views. Not good value for money and wouldn't stay here again.

Hotel charges resort fee to cover valet.bell boy tips etc and then staff make it clear they expect tips!

Cavallo Point isolated for family activities - apart from views (if there is no mist), nothing to do with kids and we should have stayed at Sausilito.

We had dinner at Murray Circle which is pretentious and food does not match the level of pretension - with exception of the venison course, tasting menu is worst we have experienced - not close to Michelin star service or standard.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your review.

In regards to your concerns, please note that the resort fee covers the following services and amenities (bell/valet tips are not included in this fee):

• Valet and self parking
• WiFi and hard-wired internet access in your guest room and throughout property
• Access to fitness suite and Healing Arts Center & Spa, including meditation pool,
steam room and men's and women's heated whirlpools.
• Morning yoga class
• Daily scheduled shuttle to and from Sausalito Ferry Terminal

Many families who stay at the Lodge find our location to be ideal. The Bay Area Discovery Museum are just steps away, while Muir Woods, Mt. Tam and the Marin Headlands are a short drive from the property.

We sincerely appreciate your feedback and understand that we are a unique Lodge where the services and amenities offered may not appeal to everyone.

Best regards,

Euan Taylor

We stayed 2 nights at Cavallo Point in the middle of 19 day trip and it was the best if the 7 hotels we stayed at. Comfortable and well appointed rooms. Fantastic bathroom with lots if space and great bathtub. Staff was professional and friendly. Not an ounce if pretentiousness despite this being a top US hotel. Restaurant top notch. We will be back and recommend. Great location in SF area if you want to be close but not in the middle of the city.

The location of Cavallo is nothing short of spectacular with amenities and staff to match. We were greeted warmly and escorted from our car to reception. The hotel staff demonstrated how to operate the fireplace, fans, rain shower, etc. in our room and provide information about the spa, restaurant and gym, which were all within a stone’s throw of our room. We had a reservation at Murray Circle for 6:30pm and were immediately shown to our table. The restaurant is beautiful and the service was incredible. Our server Amy was very knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. We asked for her recommendations for wine and after providing several based on our entrée selections, she provided us with tastings to ensure we were happy with our final selection. The chef greeted each table, personally delivering an amuse-bouche of wild blackberry and ginger soda finished with micro greens grown on site – delicious! We ordered the burrata and bone marrow to start. Both dishes were very decadent – the chef’s preparation really let the fantastic ingredients shine. In one word: hospitable… friendly and welcoming to us as guests, making our engagement something we will never forget!

Room Tip: View of the golden gate bridge from our private deck was incredible! That really added to the Cavall...

We booked this hotel because we wanted to stay in Sausalito, not downtown San Francisco. It turned out to be the right decision. The hotel is actually a former military fort, redeveloped as a hotel. The rooms are located in old style
houses in colonial style, very beautiful and stylish, like I have rarely seen in the US. The Golden Gate Bridge is nearby and that gave us the opportunity to take awesome pictures, under all sorts of lighting conditions. Sausalito is quite near, a 5 minute drive with a taxi. San Francisco can be reached by ferry (preferable) or by car, and recently by tourbus. We took the ferry, and liked that option very much.

I found the staff in this hotel exceptionally friendly, even considering the fact that the general treatment of hotel guests in te USA is already a lot better if compared tot Europe. The Spa was also fantastic, hot tubs, a warm pool, a lounge and wonderful therapies available. The hotel bar was cosy, had good food and an entertaining (partly local) crowd.

The only aspect of the hotel which could be improved was the pricing. Like everywhere in the US, it is hard to decipher what things actually cost at the end of the line. Taxes, resort fees, extra's and the ever present "gratuity" are simply out of date. Therefore, the bill in any hotel, Cavallo Point is no exception, is always a grand surprise, which should not be. Further, al lot of activities or amendments cost extra, which are free in other hotels. Like bire rental, for instance. I feel that such a hotel as Cavallo point should include such services in the room price.

But in the end, Cavallo Point is a wonderful hotel which I warmly recommend to anyone.

Room Tip: ask for room in the older, colonial style buildings.

This place is OK but not great. I would not stay here again. It is not worth the price. I think they are somehow in cahoots with the federal government to be able to use this piece of property. We had several little problems with our room which were eventually repaired. The coffee maker in the room is some kind of a joke espresso machine, and there is no coffee available at the hotel until 7:00 am so I had to get in my car in the morning and drive down to Starbucks in Sausalito to get my morning coffee. By the way, if you stay in one of the "contemporary" rooms there is no parking anywhere near your room so it is a hike just to get to the car. Food in restaurant is OK but not great and is way overpriced. Spa was nice, and I liked the deer and other wildlife on the property. I think this place survives on the business convention crowd and its relationship with the Feds, but like I said, I wouldn't stay here again. Also heard several other guests expressing various forms of dissatisfaction when checking-out.

We love Cavallo Point! We love the serene beauty of the place and the exceptionally welcoming and helpful staff. We did have one negative experience in Farley Bar--our server was not attentive and somewhat rude. That said, the friendliness of others throughout our stay were wonderful.

Can't wait to return again next year.

Very nice hotel/lodge, lovely location, clean, almost all you would expect but there is a little something missing. Do not confuse it with being in San Francisco or Sausalito, because it is not, to get to either location you'll need transportation. Getting around the lodge, in the evening can be dangerous, the lighting to the rooms from the main building/car-parks is not great to non-existent; factor in you are in a National Park which can present 'friendly' creatures.
Here is the rub, it was great with our 3 year-old, but all things at Cavallo Point lend to being a great couple/friends long-weekend place to stay, or a place to hold an event. Based on your tastes, and per my better-half, the food & drink menu presented itself better than it was, some of the visitors will want something a tad more casual; and that's where it is, Cavallo Point is a specific taste of client, it is a lovely place, in a great location, with great views, but there's something missing.....

Room Tip: We went for a newer type room vs. the older style, and loved the room, the space, layout, view, &...
