“San Francisco City Sanctuary”
Reviewed July 11, 2012

We stayed at Cavallo Point Lodge as the first stop on our Honeymoon this month, having booked it in preference to some city hotels. It was one of the biggest successes of our whole two week trip. We stayed for 3 nights on the 3-for-2 package deal, in room 1703, a queen suite in the modern accomodation.

The hotel is set in beautiful surroundings in Sausalito, on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco city. It is quiet, with beautiful views of the city. The bar food we ate on arrival was superb, having just got off an 11 hour flight from the UK. The hotel staff were very polite and friendly, using complementary golf carts to move us to our room.

The modern queen suites were beautifully created and gave us the perfect luxury feel to start our trip. We used the health spa every day, getting a ride from our room to the spa (in trunks, bath robes and slippers) in the golf carts, which was fun.

We ate at Murray Circle, cancelling an appointment at Chez Panisse to do so, as we were so impressed by the food at the hotel. The 7 course tasting menu was fun, with paired wines and a great start to our culinary tour of California!

The hotel runs a free shuttle bus into the city each morning - to Fisherman's Wharf or Union Square - use it. We also took advantage of the free shuttle into and back from Sausalito so that we could catch the ferry ($10 per person each way) into Pier 41 each morning, enjoying Golden Gate views and Alcatraz views each morning.

Sausalito was really a very beautiful place to stay. Taxi to the city from the hotel were about $38. We had only one bad experience here, which wasn't the fault of the hotel - we got stuck after dinner (Boulevard - top notch city dining) in a taxi on the meter for 2 hours due to Golden Gate roadworks -$98 taxi ride. Despite this, neither of us would change where we stayed and would certainly come back. Do not let the location put you off - the hotel works hard to make the city accessible and easy to get to.

A fabulous sanctuary and very good hotel. Thank you.

Room Tip: Modern accomodation has great Golden Gate views. 1703 - Queen Suite was very lovely and luxuary inde...

We travel to quite a few national historic sites and it was a treat to stay within the old Fort Baker. Our room was a 2nd floor historical King in the building next to/across the street from the check-in building. The parade ground was the only thing between us & our view of the top of the bridge (trees block some of the view of it) & the city. We stayed as part of a "pay 2/stay 3 nights" deal. We also booked through "Perfect Escapes" which I was a little hesitant about (normally I only like to book directly with hotels) but we received free breakfast & a "room upgrade if available" (I had booked a historical king room without a view). We ate at the Murray Restaurant for 3 breakfasts & 1 dinner and enjoyed each meal. The hotel location was great for our destinations of Muir Woods, Point Reyes & Marin Headlands parks. After staying 7 nights in the Wharf area & doing city sightseeing it was very relaxing being at Cavallo Point.

We chose to stay here because of its great location and good reviews. Overall, the staff was friendly and professional, the rooms were nice, the food excellent, and the location great. Our only word of warning has to do with the view. We selected and paid a premium for what was described as a room with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge. I can only decribe our view of the bridge as a peek-a-boo view of the top of the bridge. Our primary view was the back-side of the main buildings (a photo of our view is attached). This dampened our enthusiasm for the hotel, as we expected the amazing bridge views you see on the hotel's website (those photos are actually taken from the hill above the hotel, not from the hotel itself). From what I can tell of the hotel layout, the best bridge views would be in units 1401-2304 (with the lower numbers likely to have the best view). Rooms 2401-2610 have peek-a-boo views at best.

Room Tip: The best bridge views would be in units 1401-2304 (with the lower numbers likely to have the best vi...

A friend recommended this hotel and it is now going on our "must stay" list.

The location and the view of the Golden Gate Bridge are wonderful. I lived in the Bay Area for years and never saw that view. But the service is what really bumps the place up a notch. Everyone was friendly, efficient and helpful with a healthy dose of charm.

We stayed in a King Suite in one of the Contemporary buildings. Quiet, well-designed and the furniture was comfortable. Lots of places to sit and enjoy the view. The gas fireplace is on a timer and is a lovely touch. Bed is a bit softer than I prefer, but that is a small detail.

Lunch and dinner at Murray Circle were excellent. Breakfast was a bit blah. Room service was very fast. The spa was terrific. My partner says the gym was fine.

Stayed here for 2 nights at a company sponsored event. Stayed at one of the historic rooms. Overall an excellent experience. Ate at Murray restaurant, very good overall with a very extensive wine list. Walking distance to Golden Gate bridge and a shuttle would take you into Sausalito. Not far from the ferry from Sausalito to Pier 38, I believe there's also a shuttle from the hotel to the ferry. The views of the city San Francisco are also excellent. Nice spa also.

What a hidden gem. So relaxed and friendly. Amazing views. Well worth the visit. Food was ok but nothing special, but the location makes up for it. Such a wonderful location so near the golden gate.
