The Hakone oriental garden is in the lovely village of Saratoga, CA, It is exquisite and worth a stop for the tranquil and beautiful site that it is. It has pretty little paths around the garden and waterfall. The gift shop is nice as well. I could have stayed for hours just staring.

A serene place, the minute you enter its main gate you will feel the peaceful beauty of this garden. Stroll along, have a picnic (they have a picnic area) and enjoy!

For those of you familiar with the Frenetic nature of San Francisco Bay area, this wonderful garden is only 1 mile outside of Saratoga, and home to some of the quietest most serene views around. Everything about the garden is relaxation and shows both restraint and action amidst the chaos surrounding it. Surprisingly its far enough away from the hubbub so that noises dont come through, but close enough to walk back to town. Come with the intention of walking a bit, then sitting and just being in the garden a bit,
then walking a bit more etc. This is not an " attraction" that you get points for running in and running out as fast as possible. Also you can find for sale - at certain times of the year certain culls of cut bamboo of the most extraordinary variety ( for artist projects - not live bamboo). Try to attend a function here such s moon viewing to get a solid feel for the quiet of the garden. Also- make sure you take some of the higher trails for even more secluded views and times -- all good. Hakone is one of only two ( I believe) bamboo quarantine places in the United States, for importing new varieties of bamboo. - If you are lucky you may get invited to the nursery - way up the side of the mountain.

Only the one in Golden Gate Park (SF) can give Hakone a run for its money. See it in Spring and wish you'd been born Japanese.
