“Fantastic Stay at the Fountaingrove!”
Reviewed May 14, 2012

Upon recommendation from a friend who frequents Sonoma County, I booked a few nights at the Fountaingrove for a 30th birthday girls’ getaway. It was the perfect place to stay! The hotel is located just off the freeway(but not noisy at all!!) and outside of the downtown areas, which was actually quite perfect for us – easy access to wine country and day-tripping, but close enough to downtown Santa Rosa to enjoy the scene there too.

The hotel style is sleek and elegant, without being stuffy at all. We were immediately impressed with the décor, style, and ambiance. The pool and hot tub area were lovely – small, but with enough tables and lounge chairs to enjoy an afternoon glass of wine in the sunshine!

We stayed in a junior suite (use your AAA card for a great rate!), and really appreciated that bit of extra space for our group of three. The room was appointed with everything you’d expect from a great hotel, and was clean, well-positioned, and spacious.

We didn’t have a chance to try the on-site restaurant, so can’t comment on that.

But what really blew us away was the service, particularly from Chris Morano, the chief concierge. From the moment we walked in the door, until the moment we left, Chris was our best friend! We showed up with little plans pre-made, and Chris helped us sculpt the perfect few days. He had recommendations for the best restaurants (and helped secure reservations), knew the best wineries and scenic routes to take to get there, and shared insights on what to miss and not miss in the area. In the evening, he was truly excited to hear about our adventures from the day and if we enjoyed his recommendations. He knew we were there on a girls’ birthday celebration, and really worked hard to make everything so special for us. We felt like queens, thanks to Chris!

I plan to return to Sonoma again (hopefully soon!) and will definitely stay again at the Fountaingrove.

As others have noted, the hotel's website may give the impression of a resort experience. The property is generally upscale, and we found the staff exceptionally friendly and accomodating during our brief stay, but it IS located directly on a main road with little outside of the rooms and conference center, other than a pool.

We checked in without a reservation but with a dog, and one of the folks working the reception desk gave us a small packet he had assembled looking at "What to do in the hotel and the area" from a dog's point of view. Cute notion that wasn't expected, and again, another very friendly employee. Our room was recently renovated and in excellent condition. Beds were comfortable and our room - facing the back - was very quiet. The hotel's restaurant was on the dead side, but we all found the food very enjoyable, higher-end for a hotel, and reasonably priced. We'd definately stay here again in the future.

Enjoyed the outside pool and jacuzzi. Rooms were nice size and clean. Front desk staff were very friendly and helpful.

Rating for hotel not restaurant (Equus). Dinner at Equus was a disappointment. Half cooked chicken fingers, cold marinara for the risotto /mozzarella appetizer.

Considering the reviews and photos, we were expecting something a little upscale; they seem proud of their architectural design but it felt unwelcoming for a hotel/inn--lots of rock and dark wood. Made the reservation online and did not see any statement of extra charge for a pet so the additional fee at check-in was a surprise and staff seemed put out that I questioned the fee. The room was clean but a little worn; windows opened but a few inches looked out on a small ivy-planted area but the parking lot was right on the other side of that--room (same level as reception) was below grade, kind of a 'half basement' effect. As a result rather dark. The room was painted in trendy colors but decor and furnishings were nothing special. Wondered if the 'pet friendly' room was not as nice, instead providing quick access to the building exit. Perhaps rooms in the other building are nicer. Noisy groups heading toward the pool/hot tub area could easily be heard through the door. This hotel is on a corner right next to the freeway so don't expect views of vineyards--or anything else. It is also located a few miles from Santa Rosa's downtown where there are interesting shops and restaurants. Most of what's nearby are chain restaurants and a mall. Unless you get an incredibly good rate, I would give this a pass and try elsewhere in wine country. Even the Hilton just up the hill looked more appealing!

My husband and I were in Santa Rosa for business reasons and stayed at the Fountaingrove Inn. I was a little hesitate because of its location adjacent to the freeway. However, we had no issues with noise ~ and we are very sensitive to noise problems. The room was spotless and the bedding very comfortable. The design of the hotel is lovely and unique and the staff very friendly and pleasant. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this hotel for a romantic getaway weekend but if you are going wine tasting it is a convenient and easy jump in to the freeway and local attractions in any direction. Also, a perfect location if doing business in the area.

Chris,
Though we did not personally meet I wanted to thank you for lining up a truly excellent room during our recent stay. It was quiet and was a perfect place to recharge each evening.

I had a chance to meet Justin, Fountaingrove's manager. He gave me his business card since I mentioned our first winery stop would be Paradise Ridge and their terrific sculpture park. An inspirational tour I try to make whenever I am in town.

Anyway I wanted to say thanks. Fountaingrove Inn is a perfect place to stay. -gb

Room Tip: At time of booking a quiet room was requested. The hotel did a great job to accommodate

We booked this hotel based on it's rating from this website and found it to be highly overrated. Everything here is well worn and nothing special which is not surprising given the cost.

We will never stay here again due to the unbelievably thin walls. We stayed next door to two sisters here for a girls weekend. We know this given the fact that we could clearly hear every conversation they had. We could also hear every sing they played on their radio. We asked for a new room at 11 pm and were told they would come ask them to quiet down. At 2:30 am we again asked for them to fix the problem. Ten minutes later staff came up and told them to turn off the music. Again this conversation could be heard from our room as if there were no wall.

We won't stay here in the future because unless their upgrades are better insulation, no amount of savings would make the stay worth it. We were afraid to talk above a whisper the entire time in our room...if we could hear our neighbors then odds are, our conversations were not private either.
