“A Great Stay!”
Reviewed April 28, 2008

My girlfriend and I recently stayed at the Hotel La Rose in Santa Rosa, CA during our recent trip to wine country (4/22 - 4/24). I have nothing but great things to say about the hotel.

Upon checking in, without asking I was immediately upgraded to a larger room. I imagine that this had something to do with a "no-show" (considering there was a welcome back bucket of melted ice with fruit in the room with a note that said "welcome back". . .and this was our first time there), but it was still very nice. The room itself was great. Very comfortable bed. Beautiful bathroom. No noise issues.

The staff was extremely pleasant and the breakfasts each morning were more than adequate. Fresh fruit, granola, scones, toast, bagels, salmon, cheese, etc. It was well-done. I would not recommend the restaurant that is adjoining the hotel (Joseph's). There are so many restaurants in the area. I wish we had dined elsewhere, but we took a chance (convenience). It was not crowded (i.e., empty), but it was a weeknight. The food was okay and the service was top notch. It just wasn't what I was hoping for. . .

Long story not-so-short: It was a great place to stay. We enjoyed it.

"I was disappointed" is an understatement. The exterior and the décor are beautiful. They welcome you with a glass of house wine and also provide coupons for free wine tasting at nearby wineries. But the amenities are too historic for the modern day high prices they charge. The hotel must post a disclaimer on their website that along with the historic bldg they also have historic mattress and pillows. The TV was from the 1900’s. For the money they charge during off season they definitely should upgrade their bedding and TV. I am positive MOTEL 6 has better mattress and pillows. It would also help if the breakfast was more appealing. The selections are few and uninteresting.

My thoughts on the Hotel La Rose are not too different from those expressed by other reviewers.

I have stayed in both the original historic building, and the more modern annex across the street. Both stays were enjoyable. The rooms were well appointed and the service was friendly and efficient. I have never eaten in the in-house restaurant, but it gets generally good marks. One nice thing about the original building is the windows actually open. The drawback to this, is that like so many American cities now, Santa Rosa is affllicted with the scourge of people affixing after-market mufflers to their otherwise ordinary Honda Civics for the sole purpose of making the car louder, then crusing around as if they just drove a new Ferrari off the lot. Couple that with the urge to share one's taste in music by cramming said Civic with $1000 worth of car audio equipment, and you can spoil a pleasant Sunday evening with the window open!

The hotel is separated from the rest of Santa Rosa by the freeway, but sharing the block with the hotel are a number of restaurants, an Irish bar, a sports bar, and a wine bar. There's also a coffee shop across the street. And, as noted elsewhere, parking is free(!).

I'd stay at the La Rose again.

The Hotel La Rose is a charming old style hotel with friendly helpful staff. The hotel has two sections, the main building and a block located across the road at the side of the main building. My room was on the upper floor in the separate block and was smaller than other US rooms that I have stayed in but still very well appointed, clean and in excellent condition. It had a small balcony that looked out over the small courtyard entrance to the block and I found the area to be very quiet when I stayed there.

There is a parking area across the road from the main building, next door to a café. In the area, there is a street mainly populated by antique shops and it is very quiet so far as activity goes in the evening. I found the only place open after 9pm was the café across the road that does not sell alcohol.

The more lively section of Santa Rosa is about a 15-20 minute walk away on the other side of the 101 Freeway where there are the full range of shops and bars/restaurants open in the evening.

The continental breakfast served in the smallish breakfast room is excellent and provides a great start to the day.

I would assume that most people stay in Santa Rosa for the wine county attractions and will enjoy the quiet, classic, relaxing experience that La Rose offers. I used La Rose as a base for a concert that I attended at the Wells Fargo Theatre (about 10 minutes drive away up the 101) and was very happy with my stay.

La Rose is a charming boutique hotel located near the historic train depot in downtown Santa Rosa. The staff is incredibly friendly, helpful, and professional. We loved the holiday decorations throughout the hotel from the beautiful Christmas tree in the lobby to wreaths and nutcrackers on each guest room.

The European breakfast was quite wonderful and plentiful with everything from hot beverages and juices to yogurt, breads, and smoked salmon. We enjoyed reading the Sunday paper and relaxing with a coffee in the breakfast room.

The rooms are charming with an antique touch and attractive bed linens. Our resevation stated a queen bed but the bed seemed more like a double-size. Unfortunately the mattress was also extremely soft so it was like sleeping on a giant marshmallow so it was a not a very good night's sleep.

The location of the hotel is good but not wonderful. There is a block or so of small shops and restaurants adjacent, but the hotel is separated by the larger downtown with the 101 freeway and a large mall and an enormous parking lot.

All in all a pleasant stay with a nice change of pace from a standard hotel chain. The service is personalized and extremely warm.

My husband and I stayed at Hotel La Rose 4 nights in October. Our room was on the third floor with only a skylight window. It was quite small, but otherwise, just fine.
We did not experience the street noise that other reviews discuss. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful. You have to request ice, but when we did, our request was filled promptly by friendly staff. The breakfast was plentiful and kept stocked throughout the serving times. No hot items, but lots of bagles, cereal, etc.
It's true that there is a homeless population often hanging out across the street, but we never felt threatened or frightened. They were just homeless people, not bullies.
We ate dinner at the restaurant. Dinner was fine, but not particularly memorable. We had drinks at the bar a couple of times. The bartender was very friendly and we enjoyed our visits, sitting at a table near the window.
There is free parking across the street--always a bonus.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone and would happily stay here again if we visit this region in the future.

We just returned from a four day stay at the Hotel La Rose. We had a great time, the room was large, clean and quite, we also had a big and comfortable king size bed.

The lobby was beautifully decorated for the Christmas holidays. The hotel staff are really nice and helpful. We did not eat at the hotel restaurant because each night it was booked by locals for their Christmas partys. To make up for not being able to sit at the bar we were given complimentary glasses of wine each evening. There was always a tray of home baked cookies in the lobby as well. The breakfast buffet was very good.

As for access to Sanoma Valley (Russian River) it was a breeze and we even had a relatively short drive to the ocean to see the sunset. The neighborhood was clean and safe, we had several nice restaurants to choose from.

As for wine tasting check out Lancaster (by appointment for some fantastic reds), Bella for a late harvest Zif, Trentadue and Dry Creek for a nice Ports, Stryker and Gary Farrell for nice reds and and great views.

I would love the opportunity to stay at this fine place in the future!
