“Great getaway spot!”
Reviewed February 4, 2009

What an amazing place! Mayacama is a lovely, quiet, out of the way vacation spot that offers a variety of benefits.

The cabin you stay in is round! A great bit of architecture, staying there is soothing and peaceful. There is a TV and DVD player, full kitchen and a big, comfy bed. The bathtub is HUGE! You can also shower outside on the large deck that runs around the back of the cabin.

The Clair de Lune cottage is a short walk away through the forest across a suspension bridge and up a hill. The cottage is built on the side of a hill and has a fantastic view of the surrounding country. Carolyn and Gary have stocked Claire de Lune with good books and it's a great place to sit and read. There's even a telescope for wildlife watching. We saw a deer, coyote and a lot of birds.

Also of note is that Gary built the cabin, cottage and suspension bridge. Pretty cool!

My wife and I have stayed in Fire Lookout Towers, Lighthouses, rustic/luxury cabins overlooking San Juan bays, Yurts in Big Sur...we are always seeking the interesting, the beautiful, the accomodations off the beaten path...and we were happy to add Mayacama Mountaintop Retreat to that list. A delightfully secluded cabin, though only a short distance from Santa Rosa, it feels like you are hundreds of miles from "civilization". The cabin is complete with a kitchen, large bathroom with a jetted soaking tub, wonderful deck, and a comfortable bed. Clean and in excellent condition.

The trail to the Star Gazer Cabin is fabulous. The bridge is amazing and the views from the cabin are great. We took a bottle of wine to the cabin and watched the sun set. Remember to bring a flashlight just in case you get carried away with the show.

If you are looking for a romantic getaway, this is a great choice. If you are looking for a place to relax and read a book...a great choice. I would not recommend this place for familes with children that are looking for the resort experience.

My boyfriend and I celebrated his birthday at Clair de Lune. It was beautiful, quiet, and peaceful...all in all a great escape from the real world. The cottage was very comfortable and had all the necessities (a small but well equipped kitchenette, gas grill, cd's and dvd's, reading material, outdoor shower, jacuzzi tub for 2, access to a hot tub near the owners home, and a beautiful deck for watching the stars). There is also a small "stargazer's room" perched on a hillside a short hike (including a crossing on a suspension bridge) from the cottage. We watched the sunset there one night, but didn't make it over there at night to use the telescope. We visited during the dry season so didn't get to see/hear the waterfall and creek.

While the cottage shares a property with the owner's home, it is very private. The hosts are there if you need them for anything, but are very respectful of your space if you want to be alone.

There are many wineries within a 20 minute drive of the cottage. We did a day trip along the Pacific Coast Highway and visited the Armstrong Redwood Park (very scenic). We loved the area and hope to visit Clair de Lune again!

We stayed at Gary and Carolyn's wonderful mountaintop retreat for the first few days of our honeymoon and cannot recommend it highly enough! SUCH an amazing place; so peaceful, so secluded, so serene and so beautiful. It is the ideal place to relax and unwind and has an almost magical feel to it.
It was the perfect place to get over the stress of our wedding planning and celebrations, helped even more as we organised a massage from the wonderful Ananda, and we didn't want to leave.
We've noted previous comments about hidden costs and poor accommodation and these comments could not be further from the truth. For the money that Gary and Carolyn charge, you get incredible value. Not only the cottage itself, with its deck, grill, jacuzzi tub and outdoor shower, but your own private rope bridge to the mountaintop 'stargazer' hut, with incredible views out over the mountains.
Add in the outdoor hot-tub and the bottle of wine that was waiting for us on arrival and we will most definitely be back.

We spent two nights here sandwiched between two nights in San Francisco to celebrate our 40th birthdays. The quiet and privacy was a wonderful contrast to the cable car bell we could hear from our room in San Francisco. The cottage is beautiful and the Stargazer and suspension bridge were just amazing. We were here during mostly cold, wet weather, so we have a great excuse to come back and try a different season. Thanks for creating a wonderful place to share.

I've stayed here about five times over the last six or seven years and every time I leave I swear to myself that I HAVE to come back for more. What a lovely experience. And the star house is a unique little building perched on a hill overlooking the rolling hills of Sonoma and is very private, the telescope is huge, they even have a library of astronomy/astrology books in it and a propane heater to make it toasty in the winter. And the owners are always so nice, but they leave you alone! This is a great place for two lovers to really get away, but be near to fine dining, SF, etc.

We had a wonderful weekend here. The place is so unique and cozy inside with the circular shaped room and deck looking out to the mountains. We enjoyed exploring the suspension bridge and loved making our meals inside our room. We also had a great time visiting nearby wineries. We did have a little trouble with the heater making a loud clicking sound during the night and the mattress was too soft. But those things would not keep us from a return visit someday!
