“Great German Restaurant”
Reviewed July 25, 2012

This is one of the best German restaurants I have every been to. The have some of the most reasonably priced dinner and anything you have here is delicious. Located in a strip mall next to the Safeway, the location may be off putting for such a fine restaurant. But, the minute you step though the door you think you are in Europe. I do love there Christmas decor.

“Excellent German Food in the Wine Country”
Reviewed January 28, 2012

Cafe Europe has been well-established for two decades. The food is top-quality (as is demanded in the Wine Country, where food and wine are an obsession). It is easy to find, in the St. Francis Shopping Center, at the intersection of Hwy 12 and Calistoga Rd. with plenty of parking.

We had a family party of 10. Larger parties may be somewhat more difficult to fit, as the room is modest sized, but quite comfortable.

Our party had at least six different entrees. All were smashing successes. I had a wild boar ragout, with red cabbage, spaetzel, and surprisingly delicious spinach puree. Entrees come with soup or salad. Most entrees are in the $15-$20 range. My wild boar ragout had a mushroom sauce similar to a Jaegerschnitzel, but without breading on the meat. Very well conceived and prepared.

CE has seasonal specials and events, especially Oktoberfest. The beer list is good, although not as extensive as larger restaurants. Being a great fan of double bocks, I was mildly disappointed in the Paulaner Salvator. My favorites are the Weihenstephaner Korbinian and the Spaten Optimator, both of which are slightly sweeter and fuller-bodied than the Salvator, which would otherwise seem a fine brew.

The website is reasonably up-to-date and gives a good explanation of the dishes. Good idea to check it before you go if it takes you a long time to choose from an extensive menu. Recommend reservations due to size.
