Owner description: Escape to Africa by way of Sonoma County…Come discover the Sonoma Serengeti. The classic African safari is a trip of a lifetime for intrepid travelers from around the globe - and, it is closer than you think! The entire Safari West experience is a kid-friendly adventure for families to enjoy together. Our tours are designed to educate guests of all ages and we have found that families are truly inspired as they learn from and share with one another. At Safari West we strive to actively promote conservation and environmental education concepts to our guests, whether they are with us for an hour or a week. The whole experience at Safari West is one of building connections and making discoveries; getting back to basics and enjoying the profound simple pleasures of family and nature that are all too often overlooked. If anything is “not to be missed,” it is that sense of serenity one finds while gazing at graceful giraffe nuzzling her newborn or the surge of raw adventure while witnessing an energetic herd of wildebeest galloping across the horizon. Overnight lodging is also available - the true 'glamping' experience!

Want to go on an African safari but don't want to spend the 5 to 10 thousand to do it.

Do Safari West instead. Now obviously certain things are the same. There are fences but I can at least say that Safari West in between a real safari and a theme park/zoo.

Regardless, our guide Robert was very knowledgeable and he was tested as the tour had a few younger children who asked question after question and Robert knew all the answers and was very patient dealing with the repeat fire questioning.

The Safari jeep tour is around 2 hours. There is also a guided walk through exotic bird and primate cages. Both of which were excellent.

Bottom line had a great time here and will look into possibly coming back to stay the night in one of their safari tents which looked awesome.

I took my daughter to Safari West for her birthday. We spent the night in one of the beautiful, comfortable tents. The day we arrived we went on a behind the scenes tour where we were able to feed giraffes and other animals, and see some of the enclosures and get really up close to the animals. We had a delicious meal that night and slept to the sounds of Africa. The next day we went on the regular tour in the open air jeep and saw a newborn zebra, and really feel a part of something great.

It's hard to believe that Safari West, a massive wildlife preserve, is buried in the hills just above from where we live. Once you enter the grounds your worldview changes. You are no longer in California but somewhere in Africa. You can stroll through the grounds and see wild cats, birds, giraffes, and more. And then, take a tour deep into the hills where exotic wildlife abound. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and friendly. For fun, should you be open to it, sign up for their Thanksgiving meal. The food is holiday festive and the setting...unforgettable.

Hard to imagine so much of Africa right here in Northern CA. Tour guides were very informative and fun. Open air jeep let you get up close & personal - especially with the Ostrich .

As someone who has taken several safaris in Africa, this is a fairly authentic experience for being in Northern California. I have not stayed overnight, but the game drives were quite enjoyable.
