“Not what I expected.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2013

Mixed reviews about this hotel. For this class of hotel, I expected much more. It does have a great location right next to the beach. Walking distance to shops and restaurants. Good wine list. Free bike rentals. The staff had good restaurant recommendations. Our air conditioner was not working properly in the room, they sent someone to fix it right away, but it broke again in the middle of the night. There was a popular bar next to the hotel and we heard music and base in our room until 2 in the morning, even on a high floor. However, when we did complain to the front desk, they did move us to the other side of the hotel without a problem. Unfortunately our stay ended on a really sour note. This was our last stop on a 2 week driving tour of California. I payed to valet my freshly washed Corvette for our 3 night stay. After checking out, when they pulled up my car, it was literally COVERED in bird droppings and had feathers stuck to it. They said that this just "happens" and if we hadn't checked out they would have it washed it. The most they could do is take one night off the valet price. So I still had to pay $90 for the 3 nights. I was shocked to find out that this class of hotel would be so careless and dismissive regarding the property of their guests.

Room Tip: Ask for the side of the hotel facing the pool, not facing the club.

I love to go to the FIG restaurant at the Fairmont for a long relaxed meal with co-workers and friends. The ambiance is very nice and it is very comfortable. During sunny days you can sit by the pool and have a fun time.

My husband and I recently stayed in room 231 at the Fairmont Miramar for an anniversary getaway. Here is a list of pros and cons.

Pros:

+ Great location within walking distance to the Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica Beach and the Third Street Promenade
+ Free onsite bike rental is available to guests (we did not use this service)
+ A free town car service is available to guests within a 3 mile radius of the hotel (we did not use this service)
+ Beautiful exterior and attractive interior
+ The onsite Fig Restaurant makes a tasty breakfast
+ Interesting history, including the fact that Marilyn Monroe regularly checked into the hotel
+ Friendly staff
+ Excellent maid service

Cons

+ Internet is provided at an extra cost. For a hotel at this price point, there is no excuse for that. My husband and I each used the service once and on the same night and we were charged twice. Really? You can't charge us just once for the same room?
+ The toilet in our bathroom "whistled" for some time every time after it was flushed
+ The balcony ledge is high, cutting off some of the ocean views.
+ Although the Fig Restaurant is tasty, it is too costly for what you get. We paid over $80 for breakfast for two (that includes tip)
+ The staff became increasingly less friendly and interested in us during our stay. I guess there was no need to acknowledge us after it became clear we weren't using their services.
+ Onsite parking is valet only, at a cost of over $30 per night. Thankfully, there is a parking garage located nearby at a cost of $13 per night. Still, failure to provide free parking to guests seems a bit ridiculous to me.
+ The bathtub is quite small. I would expect something better for a hotel at this price point.

Beautiful hotel right across the street from the ocean & a short easy walk to the Pier & Promenade. The interior finishes were fabulous. The only glitch we experienced was checking in after our room should have been ready & it was not. We had to wait about 1/2 hour until it was ready.
Room was decorated beautifully & the breakfast was delicious. Very comfy robes in the room to wear.
Would recommend to anyone staying in the area.

Room Tip: We had a King Room with a balcony overlooking the beach. Would recommend this view to anyone!

It's great to stay in LA without being in LA! We've been staying here so long, I can remember when it was a Sheraton. I prefer the bungalows over the tower rooms because they are more secluded from the rest of the hotel. We usually stay here when traveling with our dog. The hotel puts out a doggie bed, bowls for water, food and treats. It's especially nice to be able to leave the dog in the room and be able to go out for dinner. The rooms are very quiet and not many disturbances to get my dog barking.
The staff are all great, you can tell they enjoy their job. The all great you with a smile, make eye contact and ask if you need anything.

Room Tip: Bungalows are the way to go!

F.M. Hotel and Bungalows has been around since the "golden Age" of film.
The famous Fig tree within the grounds was planted in 1921 and still standing strong.
The only other that is bigger is in Santa Barbara. Many famous people of stayed here from
Jean Harlow, Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe, to Pres' Kennedy, Clinton and so many others.
Plus, it's located peferctly to the Pier, 3rd-Street Prom., the Santa Monica Place, Palisades Park.

This is a lovely property located right across the street from the beach and walking distance to restaurants and the 3rd St Promenade. The service was excellent, from the reception desk on arrival, to room service and the nightly turn down service. The rooms are beautifully appointed. The beds are very comfortable and they have a nice selection of pillows that seem to suit every preference. They also have a lovely lobby bar where you can also order a light snack,

A wonderful hotel.

Room Tip: 8th floor sea view with a balcony.
