There is absolutely nothing special about this hotel. But it delivers on the basics of value, comfort and cleanliness. If you are staying in Santa Monica and want to avoid the steep prices for rooms and parking down by the Pier, the Gateway Hotel works just fine. The rooms are squeeky clean and feature spacious bathrooms and comfy beds. The staff is pleasant and attentive. The overnight parking is free as is the morning's Continental breakfast. And the Santa Monica Pier and beach are a scant 10 minute ride away. Take the money you save...have a nice dinner along the beach and watch the sun sink below the Pacific Ocean horizon.

Service is gentle and professional. Rooms are clean, even is always too small for a 4 persons family, but standard US for that price range. At walking distance from the center if you like sport (approx 2 miles). Advantage to have a parking underground. Note restaurant was not functioning when we were there (end July 2018)

The Gateway is a pleasant hotel. The room we had was spacious enough and quiet. There is a parking garage under the hotel where you can park the car. Blue bus line 1 stops near the hotel. The busride to downtown/ the Pier takes about 10 minutes, to Venice Beach about 20 minutes. The costs $ 1,25 for a adult $ 0,50 for a senior citizen. The restaurant was closed. Continental breakfast was served in a meetingroom The are restaurants nearby where you can dine. Friendly staff, good service.

Family vaction (stayed for a week). Close to shopping, restaurants and the San Monica Pier. Easy access to the pier and Pacific Coast Hwy. Comfortable beds, good parking and clean room. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

We stayed in a family room (4 in 2 queen beds - two adults and two grown-up children) as our base for 3 nights at the start of a West Coast vacation. We found it reasonably easy to navigate from LAX and not too stressful a drive after a long flight with some highway and street driving (to be fair it was on a Saturday night so traffic was "light"). Reception staff were very friendly and efficient - our check-in was late evening. The reception area was very neat and clean. There was plenty of free parking space on two underground levels which were also served by the elevators. Our floor had a vending booth with drinks, snacks and ice. The room was immaculately clean and the bathroom was spacious, modern and spotless. Room space was fine but a pinch with 4 big suitcases to navigate. Good TV with plenty of channels. We did not experience any disturbing noise from other rooms. We did not eat breakfast at the hotel as we wanted to experience local diners. The neighbourhood location was quiet and there were a number of diners, restaurants, coffee shops, supermarkets, pharmacies and shops within easy walking distance. The main Santa Monica shopping area is about a 20 minute easy walk (or a 5 min Uber). The Pier and Ocean Front Walk is 10 minutes further. The 17th St/SMC station is a 10 minute walk and from there it's a $7 Metro ride to Downtown LA which takes about 50 minutes. If, like us, you are starting a Pacific Coast Highway drive, then it is very easy to get onto the Highway and be on your way. This is a clean, well-run and well-maintained hotel that I would recommend and would return to.
