Channel Road Inn - A Four Sisters Inn

We stayed 2 nights at the Inn in early April. The location is amazing! So close to the beach and at least while we were there, such a quiet area off the beach! Both nights when we went to watch the sunset we were almost the only ones out there! The room was very clean and spacious and the bed was super comfortable. The ladies that work there are very friendly and helpful. Loved the chocolate chip cookies and our welcome name plate when we checked in to the room. We took advantage of the wine and cheese reception every night we were there! So nice to have a few glasses of wine and bites to eat before we go to dinner or out for the evening. They really put quite a bit out for just a happy hour compared to other B & B's we have been too. Spinach/Artichoke dip, hummus, salsa, nuts, pretzels, etc. We also ate breakfast everyday and there was a nice variety. One morning there were the usual things, fresh fruit, pastries, breads, cereal, along with a hot egg dish (my husband liked it, I don't really care for eggs.) The next day was a very tasty strawberry/banana french toast. I love that they have the bikes on site to use. One morning we took off for a bike ride on the path through Venice and Marina del Rey. About 20 miles round trip so you get a workout! Santa Monica is so bike friendly, the bike path is amazing! If you like to walk, you can walk to the 3rd Street Promenade that has several shops/restaurants/bars. We ate dinner one night at Marix on Entrada (which is on the next street over) and we loved the the happy hour tacos and margaritas! Santa Monica and the Channel Inn was our favorite part of our LA location. If we were ever to be back in the area we would definitely stay here again!

If you like to hike around Santa Monica or want to be close to the beach, this is an option. A lot of people live their whole life in Santa Monica and don't even know about this place. The "steps" up to the top of the mesa and San Vicente Blvd (median is great for jogging and it connects into Palisades Park, which runs along the ocean on the top of the bluffs) are near by. You can hike over to Will Rodgers Park, not too far. There are all kinds of small streets and neighborhoods to explore in this relatively little known canyon (except to the local residents who live here). The house has been here since the early 1920s and has been a B&B for something like 35 years. If you want something that is more cozy than the chain hotel, then this is the place. There are only 15 parking spaces, so if you come with more than one car, one of them will need to find a place on the street, which is possible but not always easy, depending on the season. There are a variety of rooms, and some are on the small side. This is not inexpensive but then this is Santa Monica and there are not really any inexpensive places in Santa Monica that are close to the beach and decent. The staff is incredibly helpful, polite and willing to assist you, There are always snacks and refreshments available. The video and book library is quite extensive. The jacuzzi is outside in the back and very relaxing although it closes early. This is a great place for a mini-vacation and overall, you are likely to find yourself relaxed and refreshed when you finally leave, if you stay here. That has a value too, above and beyond a bed in a room. Give it a try, we were not disappointed.

Room Tip: Rooms towards the back are quieter if you want to sleep in in the morning. West Channel does not ca...

I spent a lot of time deciding where to stay in Santa Monica. The glowing reviews on Trip Advisor helped me decide. However, I think many people reporting have a different outlook from me on what a "Hotel" or "Inn" should aspire to. For a similar nightly rate there are much more chic, well designed and decorated hotels in the UK and I was hoping for a similar experience. Unfortunately this Inn needs refurbishing and is tired. I agree that the staff is its main asset but the light on the landing still only has two arms instead of three (see an earlier review) and the stair and landing carpet is old and a bit grubby in places. I would have liked all the sofas in the lounge to be comfortable. The odd sized old ones near the fire are anything but. We cannot understand how other people can describe the Inn as well maintained. It is Ok, but not better. I really do not think having the Reception for guests in the Kitchen is a good idea. Normally kitchens are out of bounds for hotel guests for very good reasons!

Our room was what I would call shabby chic. The bed was comfortable but there was hardly any drawer space and the sockets were difficult to locate behind curtains. I also am not a fan of shower curtains but the bathroom was spacious. I really cannot agree that the hotel is beautifully furnished and decorated although our all white room could have been spacious if it had not been over stuffed with furniture. All the public spaces need redecorating with new sofas near the fire and the stair/landing carpet replaced as an absolute minimum. There is also too much clutter for our taste - shelves full of old vhs video tapes anyone?!!

We found the breakfasts adequate but were not happy that the same "egg souffle" (with minor variations) was served as the hot dish every day - for 6 days! The service area is also cramped and because the hot drinks are self-service, it means that this area is busy if lots of people are staying. It would have been great to have hot drinks delivered to our breakfast table instead of self service. Self-service just felt cheap and nasty. I think most people I know would think the breakfast only average so I am baffled at the glowing reviews on Trip Advisor. The Owners of this Inn badly need to look at how other hotels of this age (in the UK) have been refurbished and furnished and are able to provide varied breakfasts for their guests at a similar nightly rate. Mrs and Mrs Smith Hotel Collection UK and Ireland would be a great place to start.

Room Tip: Choose the decor you like.

Channel Road Inn was fantastic. They upgraded us to a bigger room because it was available. We were there to attend the GRAMMYs and, sadly, were only in CA for just 24 hours! When we got to the Inn we were exhausted---they took wonderful care of us and greeted us warmly. Helped us with restaurant recommendations. (we must have had an off day at the restaurant we went to, it was not great, but we made up for it by getting a takeout hamburger from the steak house down the street, which was delicious). The beach is just a 1/2 block from the Inn. The Inn itself is very clean, and very cozy. Bed was fluffy and soft. There are comfortable robes in the room, plenty of towels, and homemade cookies to greet you when you get there. The breakfast was an egg souffle, loads of fresh local fruit, yogurt, coffee, tea, cereal, homemade cake, toast....many options and a lovely experience. There is a very spacious living room with a fireplace for guests to lounge in, and every night there is a complimentary wine and cheese hour. Our only regret was that we could not stay longer! We'll be back for sure. We stay in B&Bs all over the world and this was one of the best.

We live near this lovely old house and have put our "overflow" family guests up here many times over both summer and winter holidays. The Channel Road Inn staff is always welcoming, friendly and flexible. Each room is unique and comfy-cozy. The breakfasts are delicious, there are aways fresh baked cookies out and also wine & cheese sunsets.

Our family guests have always sung its praises, and my husband and I spent a lovely weekend here once when our house was being painted.

Cons: It's on a well-accessed beach street, so there is a little background noise for light sleepers (didn't bother us.) And, it's a grand ole house -- so it is 'shabby chic' in that well-worn comfortable way (don't expect bright-shiny new and immaculate -- that is unrealistic.) It is clean and homey. And yeah, it's kinda pricey -- but this is the $$$anta Monica area; I'd rather stay someplace quaint, with character than some impersonal even-pricier $$$$$ hotel.

Pros: It's close (7 mins.) to Santa Monica pier and 3rd Street Promenade, near (10 mins.) the Getty Villa, and just two blocks (a quick walk) to Will Rogers Beach. The Inn has bicycles to ride along the nearby beach-way bicycle trail. There's a jacuzzi tucked into the bouganvilla'd hillside. And the folks that run it are genuinely nice. Overall, it's a charming, well-run Inn.

Stayed here for a girlfriend's getaway in Santa Monica and couldn't recommend it more. The place is beautifully furnished and decorated, well-maintained and spotlessly clean. As for the service, we had a misunderstanding about the room (we needed two beds) and the staff took 100% responsibility for the mixup and fixed it immediately (we were upgraded to a suite with no extra charge). Breakfast is delicious, with plenty of "sinful" and healthful options, and coffee was ready before the promised 6:30 every morning. Afternoon wine & cheese was plentiful. The bathroom amenities were upscale and also plentiful. Channel Road is about 100 yards from the ocean front path, and my friend and I took a nice stroll every morning. Overall the stay helped contribute to a fun, relaxing weekend.

The Channel Road Inn in Santa Monica Canyon is an excellent location and a nice facility. The staff is accommodating and friendly and the breakfast was outstanding. Our room was large and comfortable. We woke to the sound of crashing waves and took a great walk at the beach in the morning (2 blocks from the Inn). The Inn is conveniently located to Downtown Santa Monica and accessible to Pacific Coast Highway and freeways. We wanted to embrace and adore the Inn but the lack of attention to detail was distressing. From the broken light at the top of the stairway, to the dirty furniture on the front porch that kept us from sitting there to the Costco tea bags at breakfast (are you kidding me? For $300 a night I expect better than Costco tea) somebody ness to give The Channel Road Inn some attention.
