“Great place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 4, 2013

I stayed here early July 2013 and as I was travelling on my own, was a little nervous about what to expect! I need not have worried, the staff were helpful on arrival, and I met so many fantastic people who were all to willing to hang out, go to the beach, out drinking and to disneyland etc! The room was a lil average, I stayed in a 6 bed dorm room and it was way too hot - woke up at 6am due to the heat. There was a fan, but it was pretty ineffectual. The bathrooms were clean and satisfactory, the breakfast was also pretty good! All in all a fantastic place to stay and would highly recommend. Unfortunately it gave me high expectations for another hostel, which was definitely lacking!

This is the nicest of all the hostels I have stayed in. The location is great. You are two blocks from the Santa Monica Pier and one block from the promenade. There are parking garages close by as well as good bars and places to eat. They offer a very clean and quirky atmosphere. The biggest plus though is meeting people from many different countries and making new friends to see the city. I highly recommend this if you are on a budget.

What a fantastic place. Close to everything, clean, staffed well and the private rooms are the best deal going in the area.

This place was home to me (when I was in Santa Monica) over the course of two years.

You can lock your bike up outside overnight and cheap overnight parking is available directly across the street.

Public transportation will get you anywhere in the city and by comparison to other cities, it's cheap! Find a "hop on, hop off" tour bus, it's far cheaper than a taxi and you get a tour as well.

If you are still reading this then you are working on a budget and would like to know where the good, cheap eats are.

1. Rent (or better yet, buy) a bicycle. You'll see more and save!

2. Carrentals.com>LAX. The blue line (Santa Monica bus) #3 will take you to the LAX transit center and you can get to your car rental company via shuttle busses.

Next, take your butt to 4th and Rose in Venice and have a Carne Asada burrito from "La Isla Bonita" taco truck then sell your bike and/or your rental because you won't want to leave. After that, get some wifi and download the "Happy hours" app. It will let you know where the cheap drinks (and near free food at the same time) are. Wokcano on 5th at Santa Monica is one of the best!

This allows you to adjust your schedule at the beach and tours of the stars homes accordingly.

I've stayed at 5 H.I. places before and Santa Monica was the best so far. It's a real modern, clean, and cool place to stay. Youhave to pay a little more than in other locations but it's worth it. It's super close to Santa Monica Pier/ Beach and the Promenade and has friendly staff and nice rooms. They play movies outside and have cool relaxing areas all over the hostel. Breakfast was good, they have free coffee all day long. It's entrance is kinda hidden and you have to know what you're looking for to find it. Also you can only store your luggage for free in the storage room for two hours. This and the fact that it's more expensive make them loose one star. But overall I had a pleasant stay and can recommend it. Just so you have an idea when i talk about expensive...I paid pver 50 bucks for one night in an 8 bed female dorm compared to 33 a night in a 6 bed female dorm in Chicago.

I stayed here with 3 friends and we loved the place! It is a very clean, hip hostel that has a great atmosfere. the staff is very friendly and service minded. The rooms are very spacious with clean bunkbed, at least that is what we booke at the time. The facilities: kitchen, garden en relaxation rooms are wonderfull, nicely decorated and most important clean. It is a definetely worth a visit, it is not the cheapest hostel, but it is certainly one of the best if you prefer a safe and clean accomodation, very near the tourist attractions of Santa Monica! Enjoy!

I wasn't expecting a great deal going to a hostel but this one had some good reviews. It was basically a two night stop between vacations in LA and New York so I only really wanted a bed for the night while I lazed at the beach during the day.

Location is pretty great for the beach, it's only a block away. And an cool shopping street is the next avenue up from the hostel.

The hostel does look edgy and cool but the rooms were dreadful. It was fairly cool when I was there (21degrees Celsius) but the rooms were ridiculously hot with only one small window and one fan for the whole room. The communal bathroom was also dirty.

The hostel lacked any atmosphere and the staff, although friendly on arrival, were often stood in groups chatting at the front desk which made them pretty unapproachable.

Clear and simple, santa monica is an expensive place but the best in LA, and so this hostel is expensive. However it is nicely located and I have to say that they take care of you in the sense that what you need is easily and cheaply to get. Drinks from the machine for one dollar, ok tours to all kinds of places for no or very low price with good volunteer guides, judging people working there is useless as it changes all the t ime but most were very friendly, computers are modern wifi good, a lot of spaces to hang, but not all very comfy, showers and toilets were clean and showers warm if you know how to deal with them. The rooms are ok and clean. Typical hostel with indeed no airco but not a problem in June in my opinon. What I do not understand is why the hell breakfast is every day exactly the same (although it is as much as you want which is great). It is a fun mixture of very young drunk british people, backpackers, people looking for work and older travellers, that is theough. And many people there are adicted to their laptops rtc but join one of the great tours or cheap all you can eats and you will meet nice people. No, no complains about this one, although they could lower the price a bit and do a bit more effirts in some fields... But I would go back for sure.

Room Tip: I was lucky and got a room with a toilet and shower for ourself, 317, really great
