“Seafood Delight”
Reviewed September 15, 2013 via mobile

Very busy and not easy to get a table on a Saturday night but the food was amazing. The service was also very good.

The menu is expansive and includes a huge variety of seafood delights. The crab cakes, lobster (paid by weight) and chowder were our choices and we'd highly recommend them!

The prices were reasonable too!

“Preferred it as Ocean Avenue Seafood”
Reviewed September 3, 2013 via mobile

Overall the restaurant didn't have it together. We showed up right on time for our reservation but were told to have a drink at the bar while they waited for a table to be ready. After 15 minutes we asked about our table and were told they thought we had left. Not a good start.

Service was friendly but too casual for the prices. Food was delicious for the most part (octopus, Dover sole, polenta, seafood tower all winners), but some missed (bitter green Caesar, shrimp Louis). Best part is the free corkage.

“Great space, Food is a waste”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

We were quite excited to try out the new Water Grill in Santa Monica. The space is beautiful with dark wood, open windows, great people watching, and a view of Ocean Avenue and the ocean. Unfortunately, the food and service left quite a bit to be desired.

Our server was a cute young lady who was quite friendly, but didn't have much experience in the occupation. We ordered 2 appetizers each, once cold and one hot. We asked that the hot appetizers be served second, as our entrees. We were surprised when all 4 appetizers arrived at the same time. When we pointed out her mistake, she offered to take the hot ones back and put them under the heat lamp.

My husband ordered a Dark & Stormy (one of their signature cocktails). The first one was terrific. When he ordered a 2nd, it tasted completely different. He told the waitress and mentioned that he thought they used ground ginger instead of ginger beer in his 2nd cocktail. (There were pieces of something floating in the glass, ginger?) Her answer was, "We make everything fresh here, so it could be." Then she walked away.

My husband ordered the priciest salad, the heirloom tomato, avocado and watercress. The pieces of tomato were huge, too big to bite, and the avocado had dark parts all over it. Gross.

I had the crudo, which was average. Then we both had the crab cakes. Bad decision. They were floating in a bed of strong mustard sauce and you couldn't taste the crab. They came with coleslaw that was so full of onions, it should have been called onion slaw. Double gross.

On a positive note, Reese Witherspoon was seated near us.

“Nice Restaurant, Great Location”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

I have eaten at the Water Grill in Los Angeles, and wanted to try the Water Grill in Santa Monica once it opened. Overall, it was very good. Fresh quality seafood in a nice setting on Ocean Ave. The service was good and the staff friendly and attentive. It was crowded at lunch but my party was given a requested window table. Portion sizes were good and well presented. Well worth a visit.

“Seafood at sunset in Santa Monica”
Reviewed August 30, 2013

Wonderful food, great service, and a fine wine list. Two Chardonnays to recommend: Chamisal and Kistler. A table by the window puts you across from the ocean with a view of the Santa Monica Pier, and with a bit of planning, you can enjoy your meal at sunset.
It's quite a crowd, people watching par excellence. But it's Santa Monica, dress as comfortably or as flashy as you'd like, you'll feel welcome. One item not to miss: the Mexican white shrimp appetizer.
