It's a pity this place changed hands and has a new menu. Many of our favorite dishes are gone from the menu - for example the grilled vegetable pizza. What remains is lower quality. Everyone I know who used to go there now says it pales in comparison. More the pity because I live in walking distance and would like to go back were the quality to improve.

This was a shot in the dark for us, just driving down Montana Ave on Easter Sunday, saw it was there and stopped. Sat outside and had a lovely meal. Everyone in our party of 4 was very pleased with their meal. The red velvet pancakes were awesome, and the eggs benedict was very good too. The service was good, they were very busy with guests inside, but didn’t forget about us. The next time we are in Santa Monica on a Sunday morning, we will definitely stop in again.

This place used to be a favorite on Montana Avenue. Each successive change in ownership seems to have lost more in execution. Today's lunch was reasonably disappointing. The huevos rancheros remained an excellent dish. The very simple chinese chicken salad which used to be a great example of the genre looked similar but had lost taste and execution. The service was ok but without personality or warmth. We'll likely return again but without the feeling of certainty of satisfaction which used to attend 17th Street Cafe.

We like to support our neighborhood business but sometimes it is just hard to do. On the positive side one of us liked the halibut so much she wants to come back. But the seared tuna salad was below average . For one thing the tuna was definitely not sushi grade and it was tough. The rest of the salad did not have much redeeming value. The curry orange chicken was served with a slice of orange, to justify its name, but did not have much curry to talk about. As to the service, it was slow and the salad came at the same time as the main course. The sweet potato fries, and the cupcakes on the other hand, almost make it worth coming back.
Maybe we will come again and get the halibut.

We usually go here once or twice a year for lunch when we visit my family in Santa Monica. We like the wide variety of salads, which we can never get back East. I also like their soups. We've always had good service and the atmosphere is nice. I think it is regarded as a local place and seems like it does a good lunch business (have never been for dinner, if it serves dinner). I would recommend it for the soups and and nice sized salads. It may be a bit on the expensive side.
