Great hotel near the beach. Plenty of staff who are really friendly and customer oriented. The valet parking is a bit much given the lot is thirty feet away. Bar is a great place with good selection of interesting cocktails. Cora's is a great breakfast place across the street - great local ingredients.

This hotel was exceptional. First of all, it smells like suntan lotion- not in a bad way, in the best way. Every single staff member we came across was friendly, polite and beyond helpful. We are from the east coast so when we asked for help with directions or other recommendations, everyone was happy to offer suggestions.

The rooms were perfect and spotless. They were cleaned daily and the cleaning staff even arranged our bathroom items and stuff we threw around the room. The ocean view was spectacular to wake up to each morning. The linens were fresh and there wasn't even a speck of dust anywhere.

I received a call upon my arrival, during my stay and departure from the front desk staff to make sure everything was to my liking. I never even opened the front door to the hotel because someone was always waiting there to open it for me. The glass of champagne upon my arrival didn't hurt, either.

The hotel is boutique-style, small and personal. The lounge was lively every night, even during the week, and the drinks were delicious.

I could keep going, but since everything was perfect, I will just leave it at that. If I return to Santa Monica, I will be staying here.

Room Tip: Ocean view is the way to go.

If you want a central location in Santa Monica but you don't want to spend a ton but still get the service, this is the place to come. It'll be cheaper than Shutters and Casa Del Mar and its only 4 minute walk from each. The staff here are nice and helpful. They are extremely accommodating. The hotel is also only a 10 minute walk to the shopping area and mall. But if you're going to eat, go out to Shutters' Coast or Cora's for breakfast. Yoga - go down the street to Yogaworks and take Birgitte Kristen's class. The class is perfect if you're looking for a beginner to intermediate and looking to work on your mind and body. You'll feel stronger physically and mentally when you leave. You can then get lunch or dinner across the street at happening M Street.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights in June and had a nice stay. On arrival at check-in the staff were excellent and front of house were excellent the whole time during our stay, always helpful and ready to assist when needed. Our 2 night stay coincided unfortunately with the hotel bar and restaurant being closed for refurbishment, but the pool area could still be used for drinks and therefore I am unable to comment on the bar or restaurant. However this was not an issue. The hotel on the outisde to be honest looks just like a slab of concrete and is not that appealing, but is very nice on the inside. Our room was on the 6th floor ocean facing and was nice and spacious with good views. The only very small gripe I had was that the bed does not sit flush with the back wall (unable to move as frame is large and plug sockets are there) and your pillows do fall down the gap. The hotel is in a good location for Santa Monica pier and beach and is a 10-15 minute walk to all the shops and bars. Price for staying at the hotel are on the high side, but in fairness Santa Monica is not a cheap place to stay. However, I do feel that there are other hotels that are better located and have more facilities. Whilst we were happy with this hotel, I just feel that it falls a little bit short of being rated with 5 stars (except for the staff). In light of the above, I would still recommend this hotel.

On arrival the outside appears like a concrete brick but the foyer is appealing in a makeover way - creams and black with green accents. It is only later you learn you are enjoying the makeover courtesy of a $15 a day guest amenities fee on top of your room rate and pay as you go breakfast, Internet charges, bar and room service. Our $445 a night room came without any frills - no soap, body wash the only option, an intermittent wifi service at $10.89 a night, no compendium in the room- one had to ring guest services each time to enquire how to ring room to room, how to ring a local business, breakfast times etc. The large pool area and very small pool were out of bounds from 2pm on our second day to the end of the evening for a private function. Our children were not allowed to enter the bar area as under 21, so for guest amenities they were entitled to enter the hotel and sit in the foyer if a seat was available - payable $15.

On checkout the staffer willingly deleted the Internet charge, the mischarged mini bar, and explained the international call charges in the bill were actually local charges and the sign 'private function' should have been ignored by guests and the burly security guard just ignored. We were always entitled to enter the pool area for which we each paid $15 per night - x 4 = $60 per night! This business model just astounds me! Ignore excess charges, ignore signs and just complain at checkout.

To add insult to injury, fellow guests were enjoying complimentary breakfasts, paying $225 for their rooms on a corporate rate for the same experience. Our hotel transfer -at $180 on arrival- was $44 in a taxi of similar quality vehicle on return. I don't think the driver was pocketing this profit .

BTW ocean view is ocean distance views and there is no indoor eating option - on a warm day we had to put up with outdoor heaters requested by a fellow guest feeling cold in the mild weather - she hd no option to move inside.

Stayed here with my wife for three nights and were very satisfied. Staff went out of their way to help and were very professional. Located close to Santa Monica pier and the main shopping district located at 3rd St Blvd. From the outside not the best looking hotel but don't be fooled inside is modern and very stylish. Rooms very clean and well appointed. Bed was comfy although the pillows weren't the best. Can see why this hotel is very highly rated and would definitely recommend.

We actually have stayed here 3 times in the past year for frequent visits to our kids in LA. For the money we think the viceroy is the best value. The bar and pool area are hip. The food is good. The location is also really great- very close to the beach and the shops.
