Stayed for two nights in January after cruise finished in LA. An ideal choice for us and an overall enjoyable experience. Reception staff, concierge and bell staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. Hotel is excellently situated with an elevator down from the lobby to beach level ,a narrow road to cross and a very short path to the promenade, not far from the pier.
We booked a beach view room and paid a surcharge of $35 per night for a high floor which was probably worth it but views from high floor rooms over the pool would have had better beach views than ours which was partially obstructed by an apartment block. The room had a step out balcony which was great for a refreshing early morning breath of sea air.
There were lots of problems with the TV service in the room which took a while to sort out but a complimentary movie was offered for the inconvenience.
The downside at this hotel is the dining options. Ocean and Vine we did use twice but while the staff were excellent the menu was not at all interesting and we found it difficult to find something to our tastes. At the pool the service I am afraid ranged from non-existent to rude through to passably polite but far too late-and anyway the choice was not great -so we passed on both occasions. The second time the lunchtime problem caused by lack of choice and service was solved by my wife remaining at the pool (soaking up every available minute of sunshine before returning to the cold and grey of England) while I fetched hot lobster rolls, fries and sweet cucumbers together with a fine bottle of Californian chardonay from a restaurant two blocks away-delicious! These were consumed by the pool, probably breaking house rules but service must improve in this area.
The food issues did not in any way spoil our visit as there are many fine restaurants within short walking distance but if, like us, you are visiting on a busy weekend, do get the concierge to make reservations as there seemed to be long lines waiting for tables outside all of the best restaurants.
Would also suggest room only booking and take a stroll all along the promenade to Perry's beach cafe for breakfast-tables on the promenade and the beach with a fantastic choice and efficient service.
Would we stay at this hotel again-yes! It is a beautiful hotel and in a great location but would aim to eat out unless the food offering is improved.
