If I'm going to pay $10 or $11 for a burger, it better be the best burger I ever ate. This wasn't. The patty was thin, and I expected a bigger piece of meat at this price.
TIP: This is one of those annoying California restaurants that has a 'secret' menu for the natives. The best thing about the meal was the cheesey tots, which is a delicious homemade version of a tater tot with cheese oozing inside. Skip the burger and just order two orders of cheesey tots.

Reviewed August 29, 2012

Umami Burger Good but the "Truffle Burger" is the Best Gourmet burger ever! Make sure to get is cooked Medium Rare it's Awesome. Also the Cali burger is also good it is more of a clasic style burger. The meat and fresh ingredients what wakes the burgers so good. Much better than other high end burger places like The Counter.

“Very Good (but not Excellent) Burger Joint”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

I would definitely go back, but not too far out of my way. I think you can get a number of burgers that are a little better in the area (FO, Rustic Canyon, Beach 26 to name a few).

“Clearly Popular”

Umami Burger is Santa Monica is centrally located downtown Santa Monica. It can be a little hard to find since everything in the area is plastered with Fred Segal signs. But, the restaurant hooks onto a unique shopping area (Fred Segal) that is worth exploring. The menu choices are unique and the places buzzes with people, both inside and out. Prompt service. Burgers and sides come out hot and ready to go. Worth the stop.

“Lives up to the Hype! A really memorable Burger.”
Reviewed August 9, 2012

My mouth is sort of watering remembering how good this burger was. It's rare that things live up to their huge hype but Umami really does. It's just an unbelievably yummy burger. I had the classic Umami burger and I absolutely loved the parmesan crisp on the burger, it added so much deliciousness. The bun was not an afterthought either, it's like a brioche-type. This burger was seriously bursting with flavour, I don't know how they do it! The fries were good and I really liked the dips they came with. Overall, I loved the food at Umami.

We had to wait a long time for a table on a Saturday afternoon (understandable) and the servers were kind of aloof and distracted (not understandable). Customer service could use a boost.
