After reviewing several hotels and deciding between the Fairmont, Shutters and Oceana , I was very happy with our stay at Oceana. It is a small boutique hotel with beautiful decor, calming colours and a warm and relaxing vibe, great music piped all day and evening. The pool is heated to a divine tempereture, with inviting oversized cabana chairs stuffed with pillows The restaurnat has a beautful view of the ocean and Pallisdeas park. The breakfast was delicious , great waffles, $22 for adults, $14 for children. They have bikes which we used to have a ride all along the broadwalk to Venice beach. They had Ipads and Ipods for the kids to use, and free wifi in the hotel. The lunch and dinner menu small but again the food was tasty, glass of wine min $10. The rooms were large we had a one bedroom suite which was great with children, it was huge. I would definitley stay again. It was expensive for the stay and i would stay longer if it was a little less. It was also quite noisy at night , the music and other guests sitting outside, you can hear it all. But overall I loved it and would love to stay again.

We stayed here for 3 nights 1/9-1/12 and had a great stay. The Hotel is beautiful has a wonderful heated central pool. I was with my college age daughter for one night then added my mother for the next 2 nights. We were in an Ocean view suit. The room was very spacious and my Mom said the pull out bed was confortable. I shared the queen with my daughter. The view was wonderful...and you can open the windows for an ocean breeze!
Ocean Ave is a busy street..so it can be noisy..but traffic dies down by 10-11pm and you wont hear much after that. The Hotel is located far enough down the Ave that most of the Shopping and Pier traffic doesn't impact it. There is metered parking across the street or you can valet for a small fee. 24 hour valet is much more expensive but I found it worth it.

The only draw back was the restaurant was under construction while we where there. The work didn't bother us at all...and there was a full breakfast buffet in the am. We didn't require room service or any other food service..so this didn't impact our stay. It will be beautiful space when it is done! There are so many wonderful restaurants in walking distance that it is hardly an inconvenience!

Staff was professional and wonderful! Thank you for a nice stay!

We were very pleased with our stay at the Hotel Oceana. It's well located, on Ocean Blvd, not in the middle of the craziness of the pier or the Promenade but near Montana Avenue's nice residential district. Good restaurant that's open all day and has kid-friendly options. Pool heated enough so the kids swam on Christmas day. One warning: if you want a suite that really separates the living room from the bedroom, get one with DOORS between the rooms. Not all the suites have such doors and that's a problem when the plan is to put children in a separate room.

We live in Santa Monica and chose Oceana for my family (sister, husband, grown daughter) as they visited us over Christmas. The rooms are large, bedroom and living room, and have all the amenities (and more) that you could hope for. It's a small hotel (only 3 floors, grouped around an interior court with a pool) and the staff is extremely attentive and helpful. While it isn't cheap, I felt that we got more value in the things that were important to us -- quiet, comfort and service -- without paying for features we might not use.

If you are considering Oceana as a base for visiting LA, it's a good choice in that you are a pleasant 5 blocks' walk from downtown Santa Monica, 3 blocks from the California Incline entrance to PCH (leading to Malibu or the 10 freeway) and right across the street from a nice park at the cliff that overlooks the Pacific. The surrounding neighborhood is quiet and residential (you can park fairly easily if you watch the signs).

Oceana is a great little boutique hotel just far enough out of Santa Monica that you can relax. The rooms were comfortable if not a little pokey but its a trendy hotel and we enjoyed saying there. It reminded me of the types of cheap hotels you see in many American movies except Oceana has been very nicely set up.

I've been coming here for years, even before the recent complete rehab of the property. Its a bit more pricey now, but what I like are the same things as always, a really distinctly west-coast hominess, comfy and unpretentious, and walking distance to beach and all the little shops / restaurants of Santa Monica (everyone considers LA car culture, but I find the neighborhoods of the West Side are much better enjoyed by bike or foot, rollerblade or even skateboard… this is after-all LA!).

Oceana is high on the hilltop looking of the ocean, across the street a narrow park (I think its called Palisades) with a walking path which runs along the clifftop, and steps leading far down to the beach below. The hotel’s architecture strikes me as a bit like an LA-based television show set; once passed through the simple lobby you get a pleasant surprise, entering an inviting interior garden with swimming pool and deck chairs all around. Bright colors abound everywhere. The hotel rooms wrap around the pool on 3-floors, the best (and priciest) rooms are those on the west side overlooking the Palisades park and ocean. I really think they are worth the extra cost – because the Pacific is stunning from this high perspective. But if one wants to economize they can appreciate this view from the dining room and on a little stroll outside.

Food is good, no need for fancy adjectives because I don’t think the hotel is striving for high cuisine. A waitress told me some ingredients come from the Santa Monica farmers market, which is super in-and-of-itself, and I enjoy to have the option to eat in the dining room with windows open watching the sun reflect on the ocean, or to be able to snack in the open poolside.

Staff is professional, happy to point out obvious needs such as a great local gym which is within walking distance and overlooks the cute pedestrian shopping strip called the 3rd street promenade (note – the hotel’s fitness room is nice, nestled in a slightly sunken room with a view of the pool – but I like to use heavy weights and enjoy a gym’s atmosphere so went out to workout). The staff always gave me also more personal tips, an art-house cinema which I really enjoyed, where the best bookstores and music shops are, and small restaurants such as a couple great nearby delis, and the spectacular breakfast café called Jinky’s on 2nd Ave near the promenade (nutty-nut pancakes are worth a trip to LA!).

If someone is looking for flash and hip, this is not the place. But if instead one just appreciates the West side and wants to live well that atmosphere, I think Oceana is a great choice. I’m always happy to return.
