Hotel Shangri-La Santa Monica
Ranked #19 of 36 Hotels in Santa Monica
Reviewed July 5, 2014 via mobile

If you want a beautiful hotel right across from the beach in one of the most beautiful parts of Santa Monica, stay at the hotel Shangri-La. The rooms are huge, all the ones we saw were king-size suites. Also, if you need to go anywhere, their excellent driver Chokri knows the city by heart and is extremely helpful. Much nicer and more comfortable than a regular taxi.

This is where we go for a small weekend getaway while we are in LA.

The bathroom - bathtubs opening to the bedroom is such a fun, unique aspect of the rooms, something not to be missed!

A great place to stay for couples, near the beach, good in-room dining and nearby eateries. Love it here.

Thank you so much for leaving your review on TripAdvisor.
It is always so wonderful to read about our guests enjoying the unique styles and aspects of our hotel. We are so proud to be a historical landmark, and we are even more proud of our recent renovation that infused the art-deco roots with a very classy modern style. Thank you so much again for your review, and we are so happy you enjoyed your time. Staycations to the Shangrila are the best! Please come back and see us again!

This the second we have stayed here, the first time was 3 years ago. For this stay we payed for a king de-lux with a sea view the same as one we had stayed in last time, we remembered it being very small but the view over the sea and the pier compensated for the room size.
We arrived at the hotel around 7 pm to be told we had been up graded to a suite (room 114). Excellent we thought! The room was located on the first floor. When we went in the room we noticed that it had slightly larger bedroom than the previous room we had stayed in and had a small lounge area and a kitchen. Unfortunately the room is located just feet from the footpath, with the bathroom looking directly onto the car park. So you need to keep the curtains pulled across as they are clear glass, this made the room feel very dark and depressing.
We went back to reception to say that we didn't like the room and could we have the room we had paid for. We were told that they didn't have one available and we would have to stay in that room till the morning then they could move us.
We had a terrible nights sleep as you could hear people dragging their cases and talking outside along the footpath.
The next morning we were moved to our type that we had booked.
I would now like to say something about the general quality of the hotel room. The wooden floor was covered in dust all around the edges of the room, all of the windows in the room were dirty and very poorly painted and those that were metal were rusting in places.
Many of the fixtures and fittings are also looking very worn. There are no tea or coffee making facilities, no iron/ironing board in the room (you need to contact reception to have one brought up). The wardrobe space is tiny and drawer space is limited.
Finally reception. On arrival and during the room change the reception staff were helpful, but on checking out we were never asked if everything had worked out OK and had we enjoyed our stay,

All in all, the rooms are in need of some maintenance and upkeep to bring them back up to standard.
Sorry Shangri-La but we won't be back again a 3rd time.

Room Tip: If you feel that you must stay here insist on a room on the 4th floor, preferably with a sea view to...

Booked through booking.com
Chose it due to other great reviews...but also the old style Hollywood...with a modern feel...as it dates back to the 1930's but had a huge Reno back in 2006... You feel the old Hollywood...
We had a ocean facing room...level three...still a fantastic view from that level...nothing to complain about..so easy to walk upto 3rd Promenade shopping...but even better ALL the numerous restaurants along the pacific boulevard.... Will definitely stay again..check it out for yourselves...

Very chic! Everything near third street promenade with all shops that we need. Apple store, bloomingdales, victoria secret, restaurants, market, mobile store. Hair dressing, car parking.
The hotel is very clean, rooms with a lot of space, coffee maker in the rooms, airport pickup, and a wonderful sunset in the roof of the hotel with music and a lot of tables to see, watch the sun and have snacks. The rooms have hair driyer and very confortable. Wonderful bed!
Better to take side rooms because they have partys in the roof. You still have a wonderful view to Santa Monica beach. In sundays we can have a walk in the pier and see all artists, magicians that are there. And last but not the least the tomato soup in the hotel restaurant is a must!

Room Tip: Side bedrooms, and one room and bedroom with kitchen.

Smallest, most cramped room I've ever stayed in, and I was in NYC two weeks ago. Not really worth the price. Feel like I'm in a refurbished closet. The location is good but the hotel needs an overhaul and the rooms in particular are pretty dumpy.

First and foremost, thank you for leaving your review on TripAdvisor. We are so grateful for your experience and perspective. We apologize that our rooms felt small to you. Naturally, we want our guests to feel as expansive as the beach environment in which we occupy. Like hotels in NYC, our building has been in existence since the 1930's. While our smallest of rooms comes in at around 300 sq. feet, we do pride ourselves in the spaciousness and airiness of the rest of the hotel. We have so much to offer here, and if a larger room would help make your experience that much better, please don't hesitate to contact me directly. I'd be happy to set up a special reservation in one of our larger rooms. It would be a pleasure to welcome you back, and show all of the great qualities we have here at the Hotel Shangrila.

Best,

Very much enjoyed our stay at Hotel Shangri-La. It was a bit of a walk across the sand to the Santa Monica Pier and ocean but "promenade" above/along the ocean was across the street and a great place to people watch and enjoy the ocean view. Only a short walk to 3rd Avenue Promenade which had great shopping, restaurants and street performers - fun place to walk day or night. I was travelling with my 16 year old granddaughter and it was safe for her to roam a bit on her own. Room was nice - would have preferred two beds but that was not available. Bed was comfortable and big though. Enjoyed the pool area and fire pits.

Room Tip: Great view from Ocean View room.
