“Great Location - Expensive - but so are all the hotels here!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 4, 2011

Spent 7 nights at the Shangri-la before heading of for a further 7 nights in Vegas. Yes, the hotel was smaller than expected, but that didn't matter to us. Always able to get a bed by the pool and a drink at the bar, so this suited us just fine. Really liked our room which overlooked the ocean. Bed was comfortable, flat screen TV - bath was a bit of an obstacle getting into to use the shower!

Location is just perfect! We rode bikes, took the tour bus around LA, visited Magic Mountain, Universal and shopped and ate is some amazing restaurants. Really enjoyed the week.

As my title states - hotel was expensive - it cost us £1475 for the 7 nights - the most I've ever paid for a hotel in the US - however, having shopped around prior to booking, all the 'decen't hotels cost around the same in Santa Monica - I guess its just an expensive place to visit and the location swung it for us - but we felt it was well worth it.

The website pictures really set you up for utter disappointment. The hotel is small. The rooms are poorly designed and old feeling. It's super loud! You can hear the music and anyone talking from the pool area. The bed is uncomfortable. The sheets are hard. The front staff is not overly friendly. The pool is really small! We tried to switch hotels after the first night but couldn't find any vacancies at the other hotels because it was a holiday weekend. I do not recommend this hotel if you want a high-end, luxury experience. For the money you can stay at the Casa Del Mar, Loews or Viceroy. Also you can stay at the Georgian for around $200/night and just pay the $25 pool fee to get into a pool at the other hotel.

Room Tip: Handicapped rooms end with a 3; 103, 203, 303, 403

This hotel is close to everything (the Pier, the Promenade, restaurants, etc.). We parked the car on our first day and didn't pick it up from the valet until we left. The room was small, but the view of the ocean was spectacular. Despite the pool being right outside, it was never noisy. We would definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: Ask for the Deluxe Ocean View room!

We booked our room over the phone because the website wouldn't accept the displayed rate for an ocean view suite. We were assured over the phone that our room would be a suite with a direct ocean view and a balcony. When we checked in, we were instead placed in a tiny room on the 6th floor with a partial ocean view and a balcony that faced the looming office buildings to the north. We were quickly and politely moved to a lovely room with all the amenities we expected, but it started off our stay on a negative note. We came in on a Sunday and since the room we ended up in was obviously open, we were left wondering why the hotel tried to pawn us off to an inferior room in the first place.

Oh well - once the room issue was resolved, we really loved this hotel. Our room (ocean view suite, 6th floor) had elegant furnishings, and the views of the ocean and boardwalk were breathtaking. The pool and jacuzzi are nicely secluded and cozy in the rear of the hotel. It is obvious the entire staff, from bellhops and maids to the people working the desk, are highly trained to treat guests as if they are royalty. I was very impressed with the service and professionalism of the staff. Although I started off with a problem I never should have had, they fixed the issue quickly and professionally without a hint of disdain.

The hotel can be a bit noisy when the roof top bar is open. We brought a wave machine with us, which turned out to be a good call. Once the nightlife in the hotel settled down, it was fine.

The hotel is just a quick walk from the entertainment walking district in Santa Monica, the Third Street Promenade. There are movie theaters close by, and many choices for food, from expensive to highly affordable, all within a very short walk from the hotel. Another big plus in our very wired world was the inclusion of free wireless in the hotel. They have at least 6 different wireless servers spread throughout the hotel that all appeared on my Ipad. This is a nice touch that offered a nice strong signal regardless of our location in the hotel. Many hotels that offer free wireless cheap out on the delivery by having one weak server for an entire complex. I was impressed that the Shangri-La went high end in the delivery of this service. Being connected to the internet is important to us and this fine service was not overlooked by us.

We used nearby public parking in a city garage rather than pay the $33 a day parking fee that the hotel charges. I know parking in Santa Monica is difficult, but I think $33 a night to park in the same hotel you are spending hundreds of dollars a day to stay in is a bit excessive.

This is not an inexpensive hotel, but the service, location, room quality and amenities make it worthwhile if you have the means. We intend to return to the Shangri-la, and look forward to our next stay there.

We recently spent 5 nights at the Shangri-La in Santa Monica with our 2 small children and also another family. Our friends had an issue with their room and they were immediatley moved and upgraded to another room and the Shangri-La also upgraded our room from a Production Suite to a Two Bedroom. The hotel is an older hotel but very clean and the pool area has a wonderful atmosphere and they even have a bonfire going at night. The beds were very comfortable and the baths are huge. My family suffered hay fever most of our trip but did not have a problem with it whilst at the Shangri-La, so the it was a good assurance that the rooms and bedding were kept quite clean. The location was fantastic, with 3rd St Promenade only a 2 minute walk away and the Santa Monica Pier was less then 10 minutes walking distance. The door man ''Manuel" was very polite and helpful, probably the best we experienced on our trip. The Toffee Pudding on their dessert menu is delicious! Also, on a wednesday and saturday or sunday (can't remember which one) they have markets which start right outside the Shangri-La and they sell fabulous fruits and vegetables (great if you take a room with a kitchen). The 3 rd St Promenade is full of great places to eat at as well as great shopping and coffee. There is also musicians who play all along the Promenade providing a wonderful atmosphere and the council employs people who are more than happy to give you maps and guidance on where to buy certain items and where to eat. We recommend the New York pizza place and also the Crepe place (not sure of exact name). Overall, we would return again and stay at the same place!!!!

Nice, quick check-in; free wireless; deliciously comfortable bed; good decor; modern, very good location just across the beach, 10 mins walk to the peer and 5 mins walk to the Promenade.
Paid valet parking clearly a minus but everything else was nice and just as I expected it.

I had a fabulous stay at the Shangri-la! It was recently written up in our travel section of The Denver Post, and recommended as a place to stay in the Santa Monica area. I was so glad I took the advice of our travel writer, as it was a winner on every level! Clean rooms, comfortable beds, very quiet even though on busy Ocean Avenue (double windows, though you can open them for fresh air), and a wonderful staff. They were very friendly and accommodating in every way. Close walking distance to all the great shops and restaurants in Santa Monica. Wonderful food and drinks at the pool bar and rooftop bar (though quite expensive -- but hey, it's California)! I will definitely stay there again!!

Room Tip: booked through the Shangri-la website
