This hotel is amazing. First of all, it's beautiful, with a Cape Cod bed and breakfast feel. It's very low-key, but really efficient. We found all of the service, but none of the attitude of other LA hotels. Every detail in our room, from our comfy bed to the fresh decor made our weekend trip feel like a real vacation -- especially sleeping with the windows open so we could hear the surf at night. We never even had to move the car because we could walk everywhere. There's lots of shopping and restaurants nearby, but we ate mostly at Coast in the hotel, which has a great view of the ocean -- and awesome cobbler! Next time, we'll have to check out the fitness room!

since we checked in a day ago the area just past the lobby by the elevators smells like sewage. we said something to the men at the desk who looked at me like i was crazy. but when my wife inquired again today, she received acknowledgment that there has been a problem since there was construction on the adjacent road.

also, we have been trying to get our dirty tub - pubic hair etc from previous guest - cleaned since last night but they keep sending someone to fix the whirlpool jets (which are probably fine but we wouldn't know since we haven't been able to take a bath yet).

did i mention that when i arrived from the airport with a heavy piece of luggage the valets just looked at me while i hauled it inside to check in, until i stopped and asked for assistance?

this hotel is a major disappointment

This place pretty much has it all-- beautiful rooms, upscale atmosphere, gorgeous gym and a large sundeck and pool area.

Some details:
We arrived around 9:30 am for a 4 pm check-in and they prepared our room by 11:30 am, which was nice. We had a business meeting in the hotel and they also let us check out a little late. The pool is gorgeous and there were plenty of chairs to lounge. Little details like pitchers of cold water infused with fresh fruit made it even nicer.

Only two small problems in the room:
1. Discovered that the jacuzzi jets didn't work after I was already in it. An electrician had to come out to fix it. It took very little time though, so can't complain about the service.
2. Smelled a smoky, burning smell in the room one afternoon. Had to call the electrician again to make sure nothing was about to explode. He was there in a flash.

Additionally, there are no casual dining options in the hotel ($7 for orange juice?? $16 for an omelet??). There are many nearby dining options in Santa Monica though, particularly on Main St.

They also get you on parking (I think it is $33 per night) and they charge $12 PER DAY to use the internet, which seems excessive, considering the cost of the rooms.

That said, if you are not on a budget you will love this hotel.

The location of the hotel can't get any better! As soon as you walk in the lobby you feel like you have walked into your own living room, it's beautiful but more importantly comforetable. The spa was my favorit part of the trip though. The staff was very professioal, but yet very freindly. My therapist was absolutely one of the best therapist I've ever had. Everything was sparkling clean, and the manager was such a delight to talk to. I definetly recommand everyone to visit ONE spa, even if you live in LA.

Shutters had been described to me as like a Ralph Lauren beach house. I think that is what it would like to be, and staff certainly behave as though that is what it is. However, I don't think it even comes close. Rooms are quite nicely decorated. Food is quite good but not in any way exceptional. There is a nice sun deck and quite a nice pool. Irritatingly, the hotel has a small part at the front, with the bulk of the accommodation at the back. You therefore have to spend a lot of time in elevators crossing between the two buildings.
Clearly, the recession has had an impact on staff levels. As an example, receptionists double as concierge, which does not really work.
Shutters probably suits families with youngish children, but is not suitable for the more discerning traveller. I think it is very expensive for what it is, although we were the beneficiaries of a "stay three nights, pay for two" offer.
