Shutters on the Beach

Shutters on the beach was lovely, staff were friendly and welcoming, even though it was a busy time with some A listers staying for the Oscars, the food was very good and the rooms were clean and bright and homely, the beds were a little high to get in to but well worth the trouble as they were extremely comfortable, the hotel courtesy car was very handy for short trips to other restaurants and shopping. All in all a very pleasant stay, unfortunately we were just not able to stay longer than 4 days as we were touring at the time..

We arrived early and had an unfortunately long wait for our room to be ready, but once we eventually got in, room 533 was beautiful. The high beds with plush mattresses are heaven! We had an ocean view and pool view and it was just lovely. Everyone at the front desk was friendly and accommodating, valet service excellent. We will stay at Shutters again if we are in Santa Monica.

We've just returned from a wonderful five nights at Shutters - an experience we will definitely repeat and worth the 10+ hour flight! We loved our room (partial ocean view) with its sumptuous, high bed, large jacuzzi bath and high quality coffee making facilities. All furnished with homely touches. The hotel itself has a colonial feel and is luxuriously comfortable. The lobby/bar area has lovely comfortable sofas and fireplaces leading to the chairs and tables with a view of the ocean. Live jazz in the evening made for a relaxing evening. The pool area was nice and the service was great. In fact, the staff everywhere were unfailingly friendly, professional and helpful. The cleanliness and housekeeping was faultless. Santa Monica is a great location and met all our needs - restaurants (we had a lovely dinner at One Pico), shopping and places to see a short distance away. Wished we'd discovered Marina del Rey a little earlier as would have visited more than once! Venice beach was 'interesting' (and once was enough) though we only saw it from the ocean front and didn't get to the canals. We hope to visit again and Shutters would be our number one choice.

Room Tip: Enjoyed having a view of the ocean, albeit a 'partial ocean view'.

Best room set up with high beds, great décor, open bathroom with ability to open up the shutters to create a larger less closed in feel. Hot tub by the pool could use a tune up for higher jets. Great price compared to neighboring Loews. Small hotel feel with all the amenities.

This hotel I am told is in the top 10 of the world - you would not know it. I am not sure this hotel is ready for a solo woman guest as their attitude of indifference towards me was insulting and unsettling. I would sit in their beautiful lobby listening to jazz and wait up to 45 minutes for service - the same thing in the restaurant. In the restaurant I paid for a beautiful room with a stunning outlook of the ocean but needed to be moved due a young noisy family next door - my view now became the car park - a definite downgrade but they simply did not care. There is nothing worse than travelling on your own and been ignored by staff. Service was appalling. I have recommended to the manager that he travel up the road to the Beverly Hills Wilshire and learn something about excellent service as they were outstanding and friendly. I would absolute not recommend this hotel if travelling solo and female.

This hotel has some great style and at the other end of the scale none at all ! A bit of a conundrum .

The hotel looks gorgeous has some very special works of art and yet at the same. Time has no class at all ! Quite strange , nice location however but needs standards increased!

I enjoyed a two-night stay at Shutters. Staying at Shutters, you kind of feel as if you are a guest at someone's ocean-side weekend or summer cottage. This is particularly so in the lobby, with its dim lighting, Pottery Barn-style couches, furnishings, artwork and fireplaces. The same feel carries over to the guestroom, which felt straight out of a catalog. The room (premier oceanfront) was small, but beautifully decorated in that same summer cottage style. Sitting on the small terrace off of the room you literally feel as if you are on the beach. Going to sleep at night with the shutters slightly open, feeling the soft summer wind and hearing the waves lapping onto the beach is heavenly.

The eating options were good: We ate breakfast at Coast, once inside and once on the patio, either way it is a nice breakfast right by the beach. For a light lunch, the Living Room on a terrace overlooking the ocean is nice. We also had dinner at One Pico, which was fine, but not exceptional.

Make sure to buy some delicious candles in their cute gift shop.
