“The best spot in California”

This property blends a very traditional and modern feel, the staff provide a warm welcome and the layout is very nice, small yet spacious throughout the complex. The restaurant is excellent and open right through the day. The pool small but child friendly. My only disappointment with this hotel was the size of the rooms, it was a family break and the room was too small for a family of four. We would recommend this hotel for its location and management which are both superb.

We booked a suite which was very expensive but it said it had an ocean view. Well if you looked over the parking lot you and through the chain link fence you could at an angle view the Pacific. The room itself was beautiful but there was a very noticeable rumbling noise either from the kitchen or boiler room. As a result we did move to a non suite but one with a true ocean view and minus the rumbling. At breakfast which was included in the room price, we sat for ages waiting for any service at all. Ordinarily we would have walked out but as it was included we'd already paid for it so waited unhappily for the breakfast which was actually not bad.

Room Tip: don't stay on the ground floor

From the rooms to the service, amenities and just general vibe, this place is top notch across the board. I'm not paid to say this, have no affiliation with the hotel whatsoever and have logged into Trip Advisor--where admittedly, I have only warned people of bad experiences in the past--to purposefully give credit where due. If you can afford it and are looking for loveliness in Santa Monica, book a room here. Effortless but still chic, comfy but still 5 star, this place is such a nice experience, time and again. Thank you, Shutters staff and management.

Room Tip: North side rooms, higher floor, toward the front of the hotel have lovely views of the beac and pier...

Rooms were small with low ceilings (I payed 700$ per night for mine), and I could hear my neighbors. This is at the beach at a less than remarkable portion of Santa Monica, but I did have a beach view. Lots of joggers, homeless people, and locals to people watch (hey, it's Santa Monica, that is what you get!).

Pros are: walking distance to pier, really great food and room service, and the staff are ultra attentive and quick to help. Did not go to their spa, but the pool is nice enough.

This was the last station of our USA trip and we enjoyed thoroughly the beautiful setting, the friendly staff, the excellent restaurants, the Fitness and Swimming pool and wonderful Spa treatments after the long and sometimes exhausting trip. From the hotel one can just go for long beach walks (or by bike), enjoy the animation on the pier, admire the magnificent sunsets. Our partial ocean view room was beautifully decorated. We loved the big spa bath with view on the rest of the room and out the window. Their advertisement "you feel at home" is quite right!

Room Tip: Partial Ocean View has the view on the Pacific and on the pier. It is very quiet.

Shutters has the same feeling as If you were in Cape Cod, the Hamptons or Up North (Michigan). Situated right on the ocean (although far enough away you cannot hear the waves), the compact resort emulates coziness. You walk in and notice the huge living room off of the check-in area. This is where you want to spend most of your time with two fireplaces, plenty of couches and chairs and views of the Pacific.

Unfortunately, guest rooms are too small and too expensive. The oversized king bed takes up more than half the room. You have to open and close the closet doors to get to the bathroom. There is only one sink. The balcony barely fits two chairs and a tiny table. But it is cutesy. Oh, suites are nice but no ocean view.

So don't plan on lounging in your room. The spa is quite small as well and the fitness center is OK. There is a changing room with steam open 24/7.

There are two restaurants. Coast is great for breakfast and is also open for lunch and dinner is the best bet. The fancy restaurant, One Pico, we had lunch and had terrible service and mediocre food.

The best of Shutters is that you can walk outside the hotel and be right on the beach. The ocean walk goes on for miles and it is right by the Santa Monica Pier for a real back-in-the-day hoot. Perhaps one of the best restaurants in the LA area, Copa, is right around the corner.

Overall, go to relax and enjoy the living room. And right next door is their sister property that has a similar feel and worth a visit.

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms are nice but look right into the pool and if the pool is busy, so is the noise leve...

This is a very nice hotel. It's right on the beach. You can rent bikes and ride the bike path right outside the hotel. We had an ocean view room, it was large and the bed was comfortable. We ate at two of the restaurants and both were very good. Cons are the bathroom has an open window right into the bedroom area, I guess so you can still have a "view" but it doesn't do anything for privacy. Bathroom counter space is limited. And depending where your room is, you can be a long way and two elevator rides away from the lobby.
