Shutters on the Beach
Ranked #6 of 36 Hotels in Santa Monica

This is an average hotel with an average pool, average service, average restaurants and room service, and small rooms. That's not what I expected for over $600/night. The only bright spot is that it's on the beach. I read a couple of places online that guests could "walk out of your room and hit sand", so I had much higher expectations of this place than a small hotel room facing the front parking area of the hotel (with the ocean barely visible over two buildings 1/4 mile away in the distance). If my room had cost $200/night, I would rate it higher. But for over $600/night, I expected first class everything. And this place is third-class at best. The lobby is the best part of the hotel, but I don't hang out in lobbies. Lowes or Viceroy will be at the top of my list when I visit Santa Monica again. I'll never stay at Shutters again.

The perfect location to discover Los Angeles. Really at the beach, in a great atmosphere. Great service, excellent conciege services and lots of beachactivities. The pool is not big but sufficient, with lots of daybeds etc.
The rooms are great, superb beds and very clean.
Great breakfast facilities with lots of choice.
It is not cheap, but worth every $.
wewill certainly be back.

Ok I don't know if i can actually write a review for a hotel that i didn't stay at but I am going to try! We stayed at a condo on the ocean in Malibu this trip but we would frequent the beach and pier in Santa Monica occasionally. Our dog dragged us to the Shutters property and literally pulled us down the stairs to the Coast restaurant patio. The service there was great and they even grilled some chicken breast for our dog to eat! Very high standard of service.

Then to top it off, the hotel rented us bikes so we could ride up and down the Venice boardwalk- even though we were not hotel guests. I was very impressed with the service here. I won't even get into how beautiful the hotel is and how it sits right on the beach.

We do this beach trip every summer and while the condo on the ocean is nice we are choosing Shutters next time for sure!

Shutters is a very interesting property. It combines "old world charm" to a beachfront property. Upon arriving at the small courtyard entrance you get a very quaint European feel. The lobby is finely decorated with classic furnishings and provides for a very warm, home-like feeling. The outdoor deck at the far end of the lobby provides for an airy open feeling where you can sit an order snacks, drinks, watch the sunset, or just have early morning coffee and read the paper. By the way, complimentary hot coffee from the urns are available for the early birds in the lobby. I strongly recommend this as the coffee was superb. The staff was kind and friendly providing excellent customer service and always ready to please you. They did not always get it right, but when an error was made they promptly corrected it and offered their apologies. The pool offered a great view of the Pacific- limited in scope but nonetheless a very special feature. The pool staff was fantastic with drinks and folding your shirt if crumpled. A couple of things to be aware of: The partial ocean view rooms are very small, and the view is of another building- it isn't till you walk out on the small deck and look down the side street that you see the ocean. Second, the shower stalls have no lights in them. It was kind of awkward showering in the dark although the bathroom was well lit. The Santa Monica beach is public and not so nice- better to stay at the pool.Otherwise, it was a positive experience- and I was sad to go.

The service was fantastic & the staff were so friendly and easy to deal. We had adjoining OceanView Rooms as we travelled with our 2 children (11yr & 9yr) who were accommodated for as well. The restaurant/cafe on the beach level, service was great & the food we enjoyed. My husband and I had a meal at the main restaurant, the food was nice but pricey. The Hotel itself is devine. Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Our Rooms overlooked the pool & the Ocean. Sun beaming in our front doors & on our balcony.

Went to shutters as it was the quickest beach get away for the weekend from Denver, and it was great.

Property was fantastic and truly 5* when it came to service. Really didn't leave the property over the weekend.

Spa was the only thing that left a little to be desired. Masseuse felt inexperienced, and the amenities were sub par for price paid. Men's steam room felt dirty (there was paint on the tiles from when they last repaired it.)

Pool was fantastic and amazing service from the attendants constantly offering food/drink and even folding your clothes for you if they saw you left them "crumpled up." I would say this is the best part of the property.

Santa Monica beach in and of itself is pretty nasty. Tried to go for a run on Saturday morning and was greeted by the incessant stench of urine, dried beer, trash, and there were homeless people everywhere.

AMEX amenities are fantastic.

Great service, nice rooms, and the best location on the beach in Santa Monica. The rooms are spacious (for the beach) and immaculate. Only drawbacks are a small pool area and very winding path to rooms from lobby (with different elevators). Food is good but not great, so go to one of the great restaurants in the area if you have a picky (good) palate.

Room Tip: Get a room facing ocean to get the full experience.
