Teen daughter and I enjoyed the sites, smells, food, shopping, and people-watching on a Sunday morning-early afternoon. Parking is very reasonable, especially of you buy something and show your receipt.

Very overcrowded amusement park that happens to be on a pier. There are vendor booths filled with the usual tourist gifts. The restaurant at the end of the pier serves good food and drink with a pretty view.

As an area native, I KNEW the SM Pier was not a great destination anymore (maybe it was nice in the 50's?) but my boyfriend had never been and I hoped that maybe, just maybe, it might have improved. WRONG.

Just getting into the parking lot there was a tedious nightmare. $12.00 worth of robbery. When we finally parked, the atmosphere was so gross. The people who hang out there are really grungy and pretty shady (thus the heavy police presence), and the pier was being torn up, so they built this fake section to cover. The worst part is the filthy, sad condition of not only the pier itself, but of the crap they have allowed to set up shop all over the pier. There is literally only a tiny bit of square footage that is walkable. Most is full of fake Disney characters (weird) and lots of trashy kiosk-type folks. I wouldn't even attempt to use the bathrooms.....noooo. And there's no where to eat that's decent. After looking around for about 20 minutes, we decided to leave and go back to Long Beach (where we should have stayed). DO NOT waste your time or money on this "attraction." It's a mess. I can only hope they shut it down and regroup, repaint, clean it up and try to make it family-friendly. It must have been beautiful at its peak.

There are so many other piers in the area that are so much nicer! Manhattan Beach, or Huntington, even Redondo is better (but not much). Remember, Santa Monica is just LA after all, folks. Be aware.

So you are in L.A and getting to the Pier took you like an hour driving no matter from where, now park. You can take nice pictures and it is one of the best places to walk in L.A alongside Griffith Park.

Go there for the typical ambiance, but not much to see really. A few rides maybe, some food, souvenirs ...
