Had dinner at this place last week during a vacation to CA. First issue, valet parking. The lot was empty when we drove in, the attendant just stood there and didn’t even stop us and offer to park the car. Just let us find our own parking spot. We still had to pay him before entering the restaurant and he asked us to take our keys with us. We walked in, a group of 5, and were met by the manager/owner (?) who just happened to be standing there when we opened the door. He didn’t even greet us or say a word, just looked us up and down, with a look that said “can these people afford to eat here?”. As another reviewer already mentioned, maybe he doesn’t like non-whites in his restaurant. We requested a table for five and he just turned and started walking, we assumed we were to follow, so we did. He put menus on the table and just left. A few minutes later a waiter appeared, not the friendliest person either, came took the order didn’t offer any suggestions or asked if we wanted to hear about the special for the day. He gave us an annoying look when we started asking questions about the food. After serving us he never returned until he came back to give us our check. The manager/owner did come by every now and then to circle our table, just watching us maybe to see that we didn’t eat and run? The only friendly person in the restaurant was an elderly gentleman who bothered to come by every now and then to offer us more water and ask if we needed anything else.

About the food – we were given a basket of bread which had exactly 5 pieces, had to request more. My son ordered a burger with fries, very skimpy on the fries. I think he got maybe 5 or 6 steak fries. Three of us ordered the surf and turf which was the special for the day, We were served the tiniest piece of steak and two small shrimp/two tiny scallops. All not very tasty. Only good thing about our meal was the baked potato and salad. Warm bread was delicious and we filled up on it. Portions are not great and food is not cheap, so do not go here if you are starving. Can’t say about the décor or cleanliness of the place as lighting was very dim.

We left, were not thanked for our service nor did we find the valet parking attendant waiting outside! So what did we pay for, park your own car? I would not go back mainly because of the rudeness of the manager/owner!!

I've been meaning to write this review for a while. The Golden Bull is a favorite of ours and friends. It is has been in the same local, minutes walk from Santa Monica Beach since the 40s. This is THE place to get a GOOD steak. Perfectly done every time and the prices can't be beat. They have specials Sunday-Thursday (ex. New York Steak on Thursday...my personal fave) and the price includes Soup/Salad and choice of potato, rice, etc. They also have 'early bird specials'. That said...know that this is not a 'trendy' place. If you are looking for a see and be seen crowd this is not your place. But Betty White is a regular as are several other celebs who live in the area. Decor is full on burgundy booths, low lighting and fully decorated for every holiday! Old school! Full bar and great bartender. The wait staff is fabulous. One waitress has been there for 30 years. Shes' really a lawyer but every Friday you'll find her there because she loves it. I love it too. Been going there for 18 years. Pre-Trip Advisor! Anyway...I've travelled to all continents except Antarctica and am always happy to come home to 'the Bull'.

Don't be mislead by the dated exterior. We had a superb seafood dinner. Service was very attentive and the meal & wine were very reasonably priced. Good find.

Been to S.M. many times from the UK - never found this gem until recently so this was our first visit to the Golden Bull. Agreed, it's not so likely to appeal to the young from LA as perhaps it is to us who are a little more mature and capable of getting fed up with the overpriced, fashionable, trendy, restaurants now seemingly the norm anywhere west of the freeway and within 4 blocks of the ocean. But we thought it was great value for very enjoyable food - we were surprised to read a recent criticism of the steak and rib standard because we found it to be pretty good......it may be that you can do better at Boa but we have no intention of going there, let those who want to, do so - more room for us at the Golden Bull.

Service was fairly good, friendly and helpful considering that the restaurant was very busy (including, we saw, at least one family party including some people under 50.......so there). If there was any downside at all, it was not quiet, and the noise level at seating in the bar area - we did not sit there - was the cause of one party asking to move to the somewhat less noisy area in the next room.

We will return next trip, next year hopefully - this will join The Galley to make the only 2 restaurants we normally now patronise in S. Monica, now that the very different but liked Broadway Deli is no more......
