“Sad rundown hotel”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 31, 2013

No way is this a three or four star hotel. It's a two star at best. Luckily, we were only staying one night. They put us in a room next to the ice machine. The machine was spitting ice out all night without anyone pushing the button. I could hear washing machines running all night.
Our bathroom was small. Mold and mildew present. Tub was cracked. Light was recently replaced, but only two out of three worked. I asked for a new bulb and they sent a security guard! He discovered the fixture was the problem. No bellhop. The room fridge was also noisy. Buzzing badly. Pool was filthy. Satellite TV kept freezing up. Lousy channel selection.
The only good thing was the bed. This hotel and town are the result of a weak economy.
Their main mall is half empty. Most have left because there is no business.
Really sad.

Room Tip: They put us as far away from the front desk as possible. Big big mistake. No bell hop.

I like to stay at hotels which are "different", that are hotels I remember. This hotel is different. The room was nice and clean. The entire hotel was well decorated, and the food was good. Good service. And a hotel which I will remember since it is place with character!

My husband and I enjoyed our night in the newer "tower", section of the Santa Maria Inn. The whole Inn is very well maintained and decorated with lovely old furniture and decorative touches. Our room was large and the bed was great! The shower/tub had some repaired dings, but otherwise no negatives. The grounds were lbeautifully landscaped, and the complimentary breakfast was very complete.

I'll admit I wasn't sure what to expect with this one. We stayed for one night as part of a big trip so parked in a nearly deserted undercover area (which looked like it was being used to store lamps) and went to check in. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful (we had trouble with our room keys and after a long walk back through the hotel, the staff came with us just to make sure they were working). The hotel is massive - completely huge, when you are given a map to your room you need it. There are lots of conference rooms, dining rooms, seating areas, corners with pianos in, its just huge.

We stayed in a twin room which was a nice size, had the usual tv, fridge, coffee maker, bathroom was a good size but had little shelf space so everything ended up on the floor. Noise from outside was a bit of a worry as traffic/train noise seemed quite loud but that didn't bother us during the night so it was fine.
We ate in the English pub in the hotel and it was quite nice actually (not really an English pub but a valiant effort) the food was nice and good value. All in all we had a really good stay and couldn't fault it.

There isn't much to do in Santa Maria, although it is in California, but the Santa Maria Inn is definitely worth an overnight in this city. It is charming and historic, I have stayed overnight there five times and each time enjoyed it more than the previous stay. The bar/pub is great to have a late afternoon drink in, the restaurant is superb in my estimation, wonderful food and service is tops! I like the 'old' section of the hotel, the Jimmy Stewart room is great for two people. Lots of old world ambience, but still you can enjoy a pool and lovely garden.

Room Tip: The Jimmy Stewart room is a corner one, with lovely views of the garden.

A very beautiful historic hotel with friendly staff, especially in reception. Accommodation in a first floor was not so good, Not safe feeling. Windows were loose as they had been open. I did not understand what caused the experience. Noise outside came through.

Room Tip: avoid a first floor room

As my title indicates, I was searching for a dog-friendly, mid-way stop for our drive from San Francisco to San Diego. After doing a bit of research, I chose the Santa Maria Inn for our place to rest for the evening. To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect, as the night drive through the town of Santa Maria, was different than perhaps what I had in mind. That being said, I was definitely pleasantly surprised with the hotel and our stay overall. The historic inn is charming and still has some great details of past eras. Don't expect a hotel-chain feel, or modern touches. The Inn is old and charming, and shows the signs of years gone by.

Check-in took awhile, but to be fair, the staff did everything they could to expedite the process, despite the number of people in line-to-staff ratio. Upon entering our room (we had booked a king suite in the Tower), we were pleased at the large size, corner windows and cleanliness. As previous readers of my reviews know, hotel cleanliness is key to me. Stray hairs bug the crap out of me! :) I am pleased to say our room definitely passed my cleanliness "inspection."

We ordered room service and couldn't figure out why it was taking so long. We called back, and they told us that they forgot to get our room #, so didn't know where the food was going. They then said it was completely their mistake and they would be right up with the food, now that they had the room number. They brought the food to our room and said that they removed the entire tab off our bill!! Very nice touch and service!! The food was exceptional -- again, very pleasant surprise! I got a glass of wine, and they recommended their $5 house wines, and didn't try to up-sell at all (again, very nice touch).

For our dog, they had a nice large dog bowl and treats waiting in the room. As a dog owner, I really appreciate when hotels go that little extra step to make our "kids" feel welcome.

The staff, the food, the room cleanliness and size, and the fact that they are dog-friendly ($50 fee), made this hotel a home run for us! I honestly would have given this hotel a 5-star rating, but despite the overall cleanliness, there were a few stains on the window seat when we pulled back the curtains, and the chairs in the room were starting to look beyond charming and worn, and starting to give a dingy, dirty type of effect. I know that it's not a hotel chain, and I certainly don't expect them to have modern touches or brand new furniture, but I do feel that when chairs and window-seat cushions go beyond the point of no return, where even a deep cleaning won't do any good, it's time to invest in a slipcover or replacement.

Would I go back? If I ever need a mid-way point between San Francisco and San Diego again, I definitely would consider a return visit. No question. The hotel should be proud of having such great staff!! They were one of the key factors in making our stay a very pleasant one. Highly recommend if you're ever in the area.

What a great and detailed review of your stay. We appreciate our hard-working and dedicated staff that go out of their way to ensure our guests an enjoyable and pleasant visit. We also love when our valued guests bring their animals with them as travel companions. They are the "kids" of many of our guests and we do our best to treat them as well! We hope you have reason to come our way again as we would love to have you!
