I am a sucker for old Hollywood. The emotive glamour of the screen stars of Hollywood's golden age never seizes to enchant and impress me. So, as soon as I'd arrived at the Santa Maria Inn and saw the names of Hollywood icons like Rudolph Valentino, Gloria Swanson, Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe displayed on the stars of the room in which they had stayed, I was thrilled.
Although the hotel has definitely seen better days and can use a bit of renovation, unlike so many generic chain hotels in the area (Santa Maria Valley), it has managed to keep a lot of its old charm and ambiance.
Also, it is situated in an ideal location (just off of HWY 101) for visiting/touring the Santa Inez/Barbara Wine Valley, which is a wonderful (and my preferred) wine region in California.
The best part of staying in Santa Maria Inn is to experience a small piece of Hollywood's bygone era that's long gone but not forgotten.
