You're in for a real treat! Locally grown fresh food served in a relaxed atmosphere. Well kept secret in Santa Margarita is now out of the bag!

The quality of the food and the service is unmatched on the central coast! Their creme brulee is "to die for".

For a very special occasion recently, my husband and I dined at The Range restaurant in beautiful downtown Santa Margarita, California. The food was incredible from our appetizer of Louisiana crawfish cakes, perfectly cooked elk medallions (medium rare, please), creme fresh tarte with fresh strawberries dessert, and great coffee. They have a good local wine list, also. The Range is in a small, unpretentious
building, hard to spot, but definitely worth the search. Actually, Santa Margarita is also hard to
spot unless you know where to look. It is just off Highway 101 about 8-10 miles north of the
beautiful little city of San Luis Obispo, California. It is a step back in time as it looks much the same as it did when it was a little western-style townlet in the late 19th century. There are some
great antique shops in "Margarita", including a wonderful antique mall called simply "The Barn".
All in all, a great day trip for visitors and locals. You can go wine tasting right in town, and sign
up for a zip line trip if you're brave! We'll return as often as we can.

Went to the range for our anniversary. We have been hearing that The Range was good , but expensive.
Considering the quality we did not find The Range to be expensive and actually good value due to the quality of the product and outstanding food.

We started with their Man Salad and Dragon's Breath Dip. I do not get excited ofter about a iceberg lettuce salad, but this was outstanding and I have not had better. The Dragons breath is true to its name and if you are planning a romantic evening, both had better sample this one. My bride had lamb chops and I had the elk, both excellently prepared. The sauces were surprisingly understated, a bit too much for my taste but technically right on the money. We finished with a Creme Brûlée which was perfect and wonderful.

The Range is definitely worth the drive or detour if you are nearby. Decor very nice as well.

This is our "go to" restaurant in SLO county - so unpretentious, and so excellent, every time. Jeff (owner/chef) procures locally whenever possible, and offers a menu featuring these ingredients. I asked him one time why the steaks are so good (even the leftover portion sliced on top of salad for lunch the next day at home) and he said it was because he starts "with a high quality product". Jessica (one of the wait staff) has been there since it opened and her knowledge of local wines is valuable for visitors asking for recommendations. Of course, we love to have her look after us when we are there! It would be nice if they accepted reservations, and credit cards - however, we have learned to dine early, and take cash. The dining experience is worth it.....
