This place is really out of the Wild, Wild West. Orginal old saloon. Great Sunday bikers meeting place. Great Outdoor concerts. Food service generally a little slow, but just have another "Pozo martini", sit back and people watch...Its worth the experience

If your lucky enough to stumble upon the Pozo Saloon on a concert line-up, I can only say GO!! We went up to SLO for the weekend to see Montgomery Gentry at Pozo. It was our first trip out to this venue and we didn't know what to expect but how pleasantly surprised we were! Pozo is in the country, off a little highway, kind of in the middle of nowhere. The concert is in the back arena, or pasture, behind the saloon. I couldn't believe how laid back and small it was...there is not a bad seat in the house. Here's the low down - you park in a dirt field next door. There were a few RV's that were lucky enough to be staying there overnight...if you have an RV this would be SO convenient. Others were tailgating in the parking lot all day. We got there 'on time' and wished we had gotten there earlier to party with everyone else. It got chilly at night when the fog rolled in. Take a backpack with extra clothes, a blanket, whatever, cause I needed it! Beer and portapotties are available, as is limited food options. Snacks would have been a good idea in the backpack. All in all a great experience. Get out there and catch a concert next year, and stay the weekend on the beautiful central coast. WELL worth it!! Oh - and if you have a chance check out the patio at NOVO for dinner....awesome!!

We had heard about the Pozo Saloon and decided to make the trek from Arroyo Grande. It took a little more than an hour on a scenic drive. It was a typicaly sunny and warm (80F) day.

We arrived and parked in the dirt parking lot. Lots of Harley's. We could hear live music out back. No surprise considering this place is known for the concerts on the outdoor stage.

Entering the saloon you cannot help but notice the ambiance. Just what you would think for a place this far out of the way. The bartender was cleaning tables and taking orders. The menu is very limited to Burgers, Sandwiches, Salads, BBQ. And their Famous Pozo Martinis. We ordered a cheese burger and the blue cheese burger along with a couple drinks.

The drinks were served quickly. we decided to sit outside at the picnic tables since there was live music and it was a very nice day. The music was good. After waiting for over an hour, we wondered if we were ever going to get served. Finally, the food arrived. To our surprise, no fries! Apparently they had run out, but didn't tell anyone. we got stale chips and Costco salsa. Yuk.

The buns were a bit stale, but the burgers were quite good. A little too much mayo and sauce, but otherwise good. Unfortunately, they were not prepared for a large lunch crowd on a Sunday. What typically shouild take 30 minutes took almost 2 hours.

Would I come back? Yes. As long as I'm only there for a drink and the music.

If you are ever in San Luis Obispo County on a weekend and want a unique experience, take the Santa Margarita exit and drive scenic Hwy 58 9 miles past Santa Margarita Lake and have lunch at the Pozo Saloon. This isn't just called a Saloon like so many modern bars. The Pozo Saloon, located in the beautiful middle-of-nowhere Town of Pozo, is a county treasure built around 1858. It hasn't changed in 150 years. The formally bustling town of Pozo was a popular inland route to the central California Valley and boasted a hotel, blacksmith shop, post office, barber shop, grocery store and this saloon/dance hall. Today only the saloon and part of the Pozo Hotel are still standing.
The walls are covered in old photos from the original days. FInd the photo of the actual town hanging. The ceiling is covered with dollar bills. It is a tradition to tack part of your tip up there. The bar, walls, tables, chairs and floor are all original, beautifully patinaed, rustic wood. If it's cold the pot-bellied stove will be stoked up and blazing.
Skip the double burgers, which are delicious and come with several toppings (includiung a delicious chili), and try the local lingucia sausage or the tender tri-tip beef roast, cooked out back over oak cut from the surrounding trees. If you are thirsty try a "Pozo Martini", which is beer poured on tap with martini olives floating. This is the only place I have seen where you can order a 16oz, 1/2 gallon or gallon size beer! Prices are around $6 for a double cheeseburger with salad, chili or chips and $3 for a 16 oz tap beer. Don't expect french fries, but try the nachos covered with cheese and chili.
You need to be laid-back here. Don't expect polished or fast service or you'll have a bad time. Just relax and wander around and look at the memoribilia. Its a couple of ladies and a dishwasher and they'll get to you as soon as they can. When we arrived there were no tables in the main bar available. When I asked what we should do we were told we could either sit at one of the many tables "out back" or we could carry one into the dance hall section and eat in there if we were too cold (which we did). We were also told it would be a lot faster if we could just decide what we wanted and place the order with her at the bar, and then sit down, because she didn't know when she could get to us (which we also did). The food came in about 20 minutes and was fresh, good and hot.
They are only open on Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 6pm except when they have live music on a huge stage out back. From their flyers of shows past tacked to the walls they have had some big names their including Willy Nelson, Steppenwolf, Jefferson Starship and Loen Russel. Who knew?
Check out some of their photos at www.pozosaloon.com. You might want to call ahead to make sure they are open before you take the 17 miles drive east of Hwy 101. They don't list their phone number on their website because they are too busy to answer, but it is [-]. Don't expect them to be too chatty.
I give this place a 5-star "excellent" because of the full-blown unique experience and beautiful oak covered property that contains it.
