“Hidden Gem - Plentiful Wildlife - Still in Development”
Reviewed April 20, 2011

This is a clean KOA set in the midst of beautiful hills and countryside, near a lake. If you want to see and hear wildlife, this is the place to be. We even saw a bear paw print on our car the next day after our first night's stay! The campground is hilly, so traveling to and from the bath house involved an uphill climb, and the paths and roads can be slippery. Kids love jumping on the jumping pillow - we were there during week days and a crowd of kids always gathered there. The staff and management are very friendly and helpful. The only drawbacks are: the campground is still in development, so construction equipment noise during the day disturbed its otherwise tranquil setting. The swimming pool was left untreated and was not open - they are going to build a new one. Be very careful to take all food and bags out of your car or vehicle and keep it in your cabin - this camp site gets regular visits from bears. Try a yurt for a different camping experience. And for a hot breakfast - Manager Pam recommends Tina's Restaurant in Santa Margarita - excellent food!

Room Tip: Get a cabin close to the bath houses

We stayed in one of the deluxe cabins at the koa. It was clean and cute, perfect for us to go to a concert at the Pozo Saloon. I would definitely stay there again. Everyone was really nice.

We had a good time. Staff was super nice. When going on nature walks the abandoned old motorhomes around property are unsightly, even though campground is cute and unique. Pool was said to be open, but it wasn't. Cabins were really cute. lake was easy walking distance & lots of wild life deers, skunks, wild turkeys,so that was nice for kids. It still just lacked an overall experience. Wish there was staff at nite to quiet down rude campers at 2am..They have quiet hours from 10pm to 8am, but in no way were they enforced..The jumping pillow was a huge highlite though, our whole family loved it! I would say to try this campgrounds once, but be prepapred for one of your more simpler(bring lots of stuff to do) kind of trips. Very hilly and uneven for trailors and motorhomes...The lake is great and we caught big mouth bass from shore...Cabins are very unique and stars are pretty, you are in the middle of no where so when it is quiet at nite it is super quiet and relaxing..Watch out for skunks though!!! :-)

we recommend camping at the lake right next door for a better value. the bathroom is a hike, the ground is covered with a layer of fine dirt, and the pool is not worth swimming in. it was closed by the health department the second day of our stay. luckily pismo beach is very close or we would have cut our stay short. on the bright side, the kids loved the bounce pillow.

We have stayed at several KOA's and have always found them to to be clean and efficently operated. This stay in Santa Margarita was the exception. The site description sounded nice as it was close to the bathhouse and walking distance to the pool. The campground is terraced on a hill and is extremely dusty. The bathroom was accessed by a set of stairs and it was a good walk to the pool/office. I noticed a smell of sewage as we were being directed to our site. I was imformed that the pump has just been serviced. We closed the windows of our hybrid trailer and turned on the ac. The odor got worse during the night and upon going outside we were shocked to find raw sewage flowing down the campsite two feet from our trailer. We notified the staff of the sewage deliema, who were non chalent and agreed to provide a partial refund. We took the money and ran!! I can't believe the thought of building a campsite ontop of a sewage lift station.....asking for problems.

I am not a fan of KOA's, but this is not like any ordinary KOA. It is secluded, away from the highways and towns. The campground layout is great and there are many great spots. The scenery is a 10!!!!!!!!!! And, it is only a few minutes from Sta Margarita Lake. We saw deer, wild turkeys, skunk and other wildlife all around. We hiked off trails around the campground and it was just gorgeous. The bathhouse was clean and the campground was clean. It was worth the 4 hour drive and we are definitely going back. We have stayed in many different places everywhere, and we would rate this place one of our absolute favorites. So, if you like the feeling of being secluded, away from the highway and the busy city, then this place is for you.

This is a great camping spot in the middle of nowhere. It is a very large KOA and the property is quite hilly. It made us feel like we were really out camping vs. being in a campground. We stayed in one of the one room Kabins and were thankful for the heater as it was down around 40 F at night. The KOA is only a 10 - 15 minute walk from Santa Margarita Lake Park, which is a no contact lake available for fishing and boating and has a wonderful series of hiking trails, which is what we were there for. There are two main bath houses, which require a 15 stair climb to get to, which could be a problem for some. There are other facilities at the front office/pool area which are not such a workout to get to. The park is amazingly quiet - no light pollution, so the stars and full moon were spectacular. It was an amazing family weekend!
