“Mountain Bike For Miles and Miles along the cliffs.....”

Wilder Ranch State Park

This is a family favorite. Bring a mountain or cross bike and you can ride along the cliff tops looking out towards the sea about 5 miles in "each direction". In any other state, this would be a "national monument".....the sea and the cliffs are kinetic, beautiful and with every visit you can see changes in the sea and the sights. Expect to see Harbor Seals & many birds and flowers along the route. The "north section" is mostly single track trail and is accessible from the abandoned railroad bed. Make sure to grab a map from the entry station. Much more standard "back country" riding is available east of highway 101....watch out for poison oak! This park is well maintained; bathrooms, water supply, plenty of space to picnic. Don't forget your camera!

We like historical buildings, but there wasn't much to look at here. Maybe if you bike, hike, or horseback further the park may be better? Maybe if there are active tours it is better? We were disappointed.

I got there really late in the day thanks to some wierd directions from google maps. The directions took me through 25 mph residential areas, and 1 lane dirt roads and evetually to a sign on white posterboard that said, "not an entrance to the state park. googl maps & mapquest are wrong" Don't try to navigate into the park from the north end, the vehicle entrancs is off highway 1 in Santa Cruz. However, my short sunset stroll along "Old Landing bluff" taril by the ocean was worth all the hassle.

This park gives you quite a look back in time. Well worth the look. Kids will love it as well. Tip..it does get very windy in this area, go prepared.

See what a real caostal ranch was like a hundred years ago. It all still there in fully restored condition. It is a public park and absolutely authentic. Many adjacent ranches are working farms. don't miss this.
