“Perfect location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2011

I selected this hotel for its location and was not disappointed. It was no more than a ten-minute walk to both downtown Santa Cruz and the boardwalk/pier. We parked the car and did not drive it again until we left for home. The area seemed safe and we (two women) always felt comfortable walking, even after 11 p.m They were kind enough to let us leave the car in their lot several hours past check-out time. Directly across the street is Electric Sierra Cycles, where you can't rent bikes to explore West Cliff Drive and Natural Bridges State Park -- both highly recommended.

Our room was a little old and worn, but completely clean and comfortable. Decent beds with plenty of pillows, fridge and microwave. We are not the type of people to hang out in the room. We don't care how big the TV is or how many channels it gets. As a comfortable place to sleep and take a shower this hotel was perfect for us.

If you plan on spending time downtown and on the waterfront, this is a great option.

Were given an upgrade to one of the renovated rooms at the Bay Front Inn.

The good: The room had a comfy queen bed and a 40+" flatscreen tv with dish network reception (includes HBO and many pay-per-view options). There's also a microwave and a fridge, and a heating/cooling unit that works well (this time of year, we used both heat and a/c in one day). The wireless connection password is posted on the door (convenient!).

The okay: There's a continental breakfast from 8am-10am in the office. Coffee there was better than most places offering similar breakfasts, plus cereal, oatmeal, milk, and pastries. The breakfast spread is thin though, so show up closer to 8am than 10am. Sunday morning, the office didn't open until 8.15am--no answer to the "night bell". A bunch of irate, caffeine-deprived guests stood at the door. "They're not doing their job," a woman explained to her son. Oof.

The beach is nearby but not super-nearby; you can be walking on the sand in 10 minutes. We had two great breakfasts at the beach street cafe, about 15 minutes walking.

The bad: There is not enough parking in the lot. If the place is full, you will have to park on the street; Santa Cruz meters are every day (including sunday) from 9.00am on. There was no closet in our room, just a bar with some hangars. There was no dresser or desk either, and just a folding tray to hold our luggage. There was only a single chair to sit on. There was no carpeting in our room, made the room feel both beachy and unwelcoming; this is not a room you want to lounge in for the day. The renovation seems to have focused on the really important stuff: the bed, the tv, the climate control, and left everything else to our imagination.

There are many hotels in this area, many are motels like the Bay Front. If I return to Santa Cruz for vacation, I'd choose a place that's right on the water. Price was in the range of $90/night for a Friday + Saturday night stay; I think I could have scored a better place if I'd done more research beforehand.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the renovated rooms, which have comfy beds and flatscreen tvs.

It's a motel in a college beach town, not a 4-star hotel, but you will be pleasantly suprised. The rooms are good size and comfortable and the bed was great. My room had a spa tub in it!, fridge, and a microwave. Very nice flat screen television. The staff is friendly and helpful and responded immediately to any requests. The grounds were clean, neatly kepy, and pretty with flowers blooming in boxes and along the front and a small clean pool area was relaxing. The Bay Front Inn is within walking distance of the beach, the pier, and downtown and they had free parking. I left my car in the parking lot and walked all weekend. It was 2-night stay for me and if I hadn't had plans already in place I would have been tempted to stay and explore more of the nearby attractions. I was a woman traveling solo and felt completely safe at the Bay Front Inn and didn't worry about my car. Additionally, internet access was available from the room and coffee and some basic muffins and such were available each morning in the lobby.

I was pleasantly surpised by the quality of the room and extremely pleased by the staff. I did have a minor problem with a bathroom switch not working and they did everything they could to make sure I was happy with a temporary solution. I have been in 4 star hotels in Vegas where they cared a whole lot less than this small, friendly motel.

Room Tip: Some rooms have been renovated, others won't be done for a few months yet, so ask for one of the...

Being from the UK we didn't know what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised - very helpful front desk staff, clean rooms with fresh bedding and towels every day, with maid service. Decor is not up-to-date but is not shabby - may be this one hasn't been refurbished. Beds were very comfortable. Easy access to the beach and a short walk to downtown. There was a small pool which was very clean, with sunloungers and chairs. A very pleasant time was had by all. Would recommend it as a beach holiday location.

Room Tip: we were on the back of the complex near a roundabout and another hotel, however, we were never distu...

The friendliest and most helpful front desk staff we have encountered. This has led to repeat stays for our family.
This is a work in progress motel; reasonably priced. Some of the rooms have been refurbished, others not. Very much a two star reaching for a third.
It is located near the Beach and Boardwalk and easy to reach.

Room Tip: Request a refurbished room

This is a motel. So, noise is normal. Rates are usually good but were high for Labor Day weekend, but that's down to location.

I've stayed here several times. Safe, park near the beach, walk to the boardwalk in the day, stagger back from the best bars in SC in a few minutes at night. Perfect!

Plus they've renovated (some) rooms, looks much better than a typical motel. Check in and park 3pm, ask for a renovated room, and go enjoy Santa Cruz 'til late. Enjoy!

A great find just 3 minutes' walk from the centre of Santa Cruz. The bay front inn is a traditional motel that's been updated with bright fresh and fairly minimalist decor, comfortable beds and crisp white bedlinen. Big flatscreen tv's.
At $ 60-80 a night we thought it was amazing value for money and a brilliant alternative to other tired motel rooms within the same price range.
Complementary coffee, muffins and fresh fruit were available in reception in the morning, and an in-room folder suggests favourite local eateries, bars and sights to see. Reception staff were also very helpful offering more suggestions when we checked in. We didn't bring our dog, but next time we will they even had doggy treats in the lobby.
