Just had a surprisingly good meal at West End in Santa Cruz. Great beer and gourmet meals but inside a beer pub. Delicious food. Our group had flatbreads, short rib with cheesy polenta, smoked salmon with oyster mushrooms, and roasted chicken.

Service was excellent and friendly. But the best thing about the meal was the venue itself. We were seated in an enclosed alcove with blackboard walls that the kids could draw on with chalk. It also contained some of the noise too. Never seen anything like it...brilliant. If you have kids, ask to sit in one of these, they have at least three.

Great beers too...

One of the best parts of Santa Cruz is the great restaurants - and west end is no exception. A friend recommended it a few trips ago and there was nothing not to like. Great selection of beer. Great food - the hamburgers are great. Pleasant staff. Nice atmosphere..

We came here at about 5:00 after picking up our wine club shipment and wine tasting at Santa Cruz Mountain Winery wine tasting We got a 6:30 reservation and spent the time before dinner walking down to West Cliff and enjoying there ocean views. All together, including our meal, this made for a very nice afternoon/evening.

I recommend the salmon dish. The edamame and white beans (not sure what kind) made were a great complement to the well prepared salmon. The service was friendly, and the atmosphere is upbeat and open.

My partner ordered a hamburger. Really really good-- but just a hamburger. Next time I think I'll try a flat bread. They looked creative and delicious.

Consider this for a nice finish to your Santa Cruz wine tasting day. Make a reservation, though. It fills up. I think we got lucky walking in like we did.

The food here was fine, however, we had to wait over an hour to receive our entrees. We ordered burgers & steaks. Although our server apologized for the poor service by telling us that they were backed up in the kitchen and when that happens "someone always suffers and tonight it was your table", she did nothing to correct or alleviate the situation. As the owner of a restaurant, I recommend empowering your staff to bring out a complimentary bowl of popcorn and say more than "oops". The tables seated on either side of us who sat after we did, got their meals at the same time we did. We had a 7:45 reservation (4 of us), ordered at 7:55 and got our dinner at 9.....needless to say, we will not recommend this place. The food was fine when we got it, but not worth that kind of wait!
