“Not bad”
Reviewed August 9, 2013

Nice and clean, did exactly what we wanted.
Slightly overpriced but rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable. Quite modern looking inside. Plenty of parking spaces.

The kids enjoyed the pool and hot tub

Nice contemporary design. Friendly welcome by staff upon arrival. Easy parking close to the rooms which are clean with great furniture and decoration. Bed and sheets are superb. One of the best sheets I've ever slept in. Both pool and hottub are excellent with enough poolchairs to relax. Breakfast is excellent but is not included in the room price. For what you pay per night a basic continental breakfast should be included.

However, besides all the fancy and style there are some things that can be improved. Our room was next to the elevator which made noise everytime it was used. Room very small with almost no place to put suitcases. Happy hour was only on very small selection of drinks, not on the cocktails. Food way overprized. Offered quality not good enough for the high price they charge.

If you make a stopover in Santa Cruz this hotel is a welcome break from hours of driving and a good place to relax.

We checked in here and got good service, 2 drinks on our bill to have cause on honeymoon, that was kind.. Our room key then wouldn't work, so after returning to the desk and listening to phone reservations (shouldn't someone be in a back office to do that, to leave reception be for the actual guests?!) the girl put 2 extra free drinks on our room bill. That was a nice touch, she didn't need to, we were pleased with that. We then went to the pool, being on honeymoon, it wasn't as chilled as it could have been because of the noisy and annoying kids everywhere, even in the hot tub.. But hey, it not an adults only place.
Happy hour was 3 hrs, good value and friendly wait staff. Dinner also cool, well thought out menu and clean, modern feel to the dining room! Great waiter service too.
Bar is impressive and you can see the pride the staff have in their jobs , well done. Lastly the rooms were sleek, modern and clean, with air con, comfy beds, and a good night sleep there.
Would recommend, however it is pricy, look out for an advance purchase deal or something.. We were last minute so we took the cost.

It was nice and clean, exercise room was good, everything worked fine (except the temp control as the a/c could not keep up), staff was friendly & the lobby even made a good attempt to be trendy. The 3 star rating really reflects the cost -- it would have been a great hotel at half the cost and a reasonable stay at 3/4 the cost. In case you're not sensing the theme -- it is overpriced for what you get.

Checked in for two nights with hubby and 7year old son, on arrival, staff were very helpful and friendly, they let us check in early and so we were able to hit the beach straight away. Rooms are modern and very clean, absolutely no complaints whatsoever.
The beach is about a 20min walk, or you can get the free trolley which is a 10min walk away, either way its a pleasant walk and even at 10pm walking back from the boardwalk everything thing felt safe.
Would definitely stay again....

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms have seating outside so very nice in the evening..

Don't let the fancy tree desk in the hotel lobby fool you. It's cool, yes. But the staff lacked the training of a high-end hotel and the rooms were very small with temperature problems.

The bed, however, was very comfortable and the shower was very neato with a rain forest shower head and a pebble aggregate bottom. They also provided a comfy robe, which I liked.

Would recommend this hotel if you like hip decor and sustainable soaps and shampoos but not if you're looking for a quiet, higher end hotel with more amenities and exemplary service.

One more thing, I didn't swim but the pool and spa looked very nice.

Dear KDonna66,

Thank you for your recent stay and review of Hotel Paradox. I'm happy to hear you enjoyed the shower, plush robe and the thought the pool area looked good. I am concerned that you feel we are not all we represent ourselves as-I would be happy to review anything we could do to make it a better experience. If service was lacking, where did we fail you? I'm interested to know so that we can create a better experience in the future and ensure we take better care of any concerns you have. We are not trying to be hipsters, what we are trying to provide is a unique, fun, upscale Hotel stay and wish to offer individual services to every guest experience. If we missed it, I'd love to know how to correct it from your point of view. I appreciate the feedback and welcome an email or discussion over the phone-please feel free to contact me however you wish. Trip Advisor is pretty anonymous, so I can't really track you down. :)

Appreciate your reply,

We are 40-something professionals with a toddler son. We love traveling, but we are totally over staying in cheap motels, waking up with back aches, having crappy on-site (or no) food options, or dealing with the "dank" that you find in many beachside motels. We like the finer things in life but are not loaded, so we seek out special accommodations like this!

Allow me to highlight the things that I loved about the Hotel Paradox:

The Hotel: It feels like someone took the Holiday Inn and turned it into a W or Kimpton Hotel. Sure, it's not quite the same as a W.. but that's the general vibe. And it's super kid friendly. So we can travel in style and not get the stink-eye every time our kid is noisy or drops something. They have a couple great conference rooms too. Woudl be a great place for such an event.

Our Room: Yeah, it was a little small, but our kid still found space to play on the floor between the beds, on the super clean and new carpet. The decor was funky and cool. It had a nice desk area with an adjustable office chair, dressers, a closet, a big TV, and everything we needed. The linens were all white, crisp and clean. Even the comforter was white and washable. One thing I did NOT like was lack of fitted sheet. I Sure know how to tear up a bed in 5 minutes just by rolling over. What I also loved is that the room had TONS of outlets for our tech-gadgets to re-charge (an outlet by each bedside table as well as a few in the desk area). IT also had a ton of lights, so you could adjust for whatever you needed (work time / nap time / night reading) and you didn't have to get out of bed to turn off your light. They have Keurig coffee maker with Tully's dark roast coffee and Celestial Tea. Extra fast, and decent coffee. Did I mention the free Wi-Fi?

We were on the back side overlooking the parking lot and sherrif's department, which was just fine by us. Our son LOVES police cars, and it was quiet over there. The pool-side rooms on the first floor have cool patios, but are probably very noisy due to the pool area and people walking by your room all the time.

Bathoom: abundance of super soft fluffy towels, nice toiletry products, luxurious robes, a safe to store our valuables, a mini-fridge with nothing in it so we could store our sons milk and snacks, clean crisp bed linens, the kind of comforter that they can wash (white!), and a bath fan so powerful you won't be afraid to enter the bathroom after your spouse's long visit (you know what I mean!)

The Bar: they got their full liquor license while we were there, and had an array of great cocktails to choose from. My husband is in the booze business and it passed muster with him. They have fantastic fancy plastic cups so you can have your cocktails poolside. Along with a great menu of food that you can snack on in your pool lounge chair.

The Restaurant: Super delicious and amazingly kid friendly. They have a whole kids menu. Very attentive and friendly wait staff. The food was delicious. I had the Shrimp & Grits (divine!) and my husband had the Salmon over Cabbage (healthy & delicious), and our son had a burger (tasty!). Our son spilled his water all over the table and two servers jumped to the rescue to clean it up without batting an eye.

The Pool: It's heated! What else could I ask for? It was a cool day, but the water was just right for a splash with the kid. There is a convenient outdoor bathroom by the pool, handicapped access into the pool, and a big shallow end for kids to play and a deep end for adults. There is also a separat hot tub, cabanas, and tons of lounge chairs. The bar is outdoors at the pool as well as inside the restaurant. The environment looks like a fancy Las Vegas hotel pool, but there were tons of kids there.

Finally, I must comment on some past reivews that indicate that this hotel is in a dangerous neighborhood. This hotel is on the main street through Santa Cruz where at least 50% of the hotels are situated. I almost didn't stay at this hotel because of prior reviewers characterizing it as dangerous. One went so far as to say that someone got shot behind the hotel. Yes, there was a mugging in the park behind the hotel last month, at 10pm, in the middle of San Lorenzo Park by the duck pond, NOT right behind the hotel. And the neighborhood is not even remotely sketchy. I am so glad that I gave this hotel a chance. I felt 100% comfortable staying here with my family. (The Sheriff's office is right next door!)

Room Tip: If you want to hang out on your patio and watch all the action at the pool, ask for a 1st floor room...
