Just like the 808, only closer. We visit the islands every year but this is so close to home. This time we ate there two nights running.

Food here was hit and miss. Good poke and musubi's, but some of the food we ordered were far too burned and not entirely edible. Located in a bar, Pono's has a good positive vibe. Wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again.

I liked the coconut shrimp and the pork lau lau. There is an indoor and outdoor eating area, pet friendly and smoke free!

We have been to Pono's/The Reef Bar the last two Friday nights. We love the beautiful Hawaiian music and sometimes hula dancers on Friday nights. It does make me miss Hawaii though. We have always enjoyed our meals, very tastey.

Over the years I've eaten saimin (Hawaiian noodle soup) many times on every Hawaiian island, but the chicken saimin at Pono Hawaiian Grill is my hands-down favorite. First of all it's HUGE, easily enough for two people. It's loaded with delicious chunks of barbecued chicken, noodles and veggies, and topped with a boiled egg and fish cake. The broth is sooooo rich and flavorful. AND, it's very reasonably priced - best bang for your buck in downtown Santa Cruz. Their teriyaki rice bowls are also good. The vibe is hang-loose Hawaii, a great spot for lunch or dinner.
