You don't need to go to Ashland, Oregon to experience Shakespeare during the summer. We were pleasantly surprised to learn about this special theater group on the UCSC campus. Chairs are set-up in a space that is otherwise filled with redwood trees. You feel like you are in the forest because you are in the forest! It is a small venue with not a bad seat in the house. Bring your picnic dinner, a couple glasses of wine, and get ready for an enjoyable evening.

“Very Enjoyable!”
Reviewed August 7, 2012

I'll leave the reviews of the productions to professionals. The overall experience of going to Shakespeare Santa Cruz was great. We saw their production of "Man in the Iron Mask" in the Glen, an outdoor theater. The production was wonderful but the experience of seeing a play outside, at night where you could occasionally see the actor's breath and at one point see the fog roll in across the theater's lights, was wonderful. We were 'groundlings' (sat on the ground) We brought quilts, wine, and food. You can rent chair backs for $3 (recommended). I would do this again in a heartbeat!

We also saw a play ("Twelfth Night") in the indoor theater. This was a more traditional experience. The theater seats are a little too close together for tall persons. The production itself was enjoyable. There is food for sale outside of the theater which was not that great on the day we were there. The coffee was good and desert was average.

“Just As You Like It”
Reviewed July 25, 2012

World Premiere Preview of "The Man in the Iron Mask" and it was as good as it gets. The afternoon setting in the redwoods, food and wine, superb Thespians and an absolutely flawless (to us out there) production first up. We collectively doff our feathered hats to you all. The Brotherhood lives on and no doubt the accolades will follow.

“As good as the old Vic or Broadway”
Reviewed July 14, 2012

We have gone to all the plays for 26 years. Naturally some plays are better than others. However, the acting and creativity is always great.

We would urge everyone to go. Live theatre is struggling considering all the t.v. and movies. It is a unique experience and we are so lucky in Santa Cruz to have such sterling performances.

We make a point to go to a show early in the month because on many occasions, the play is so good, we go a second time.

The settings are spectacular, both outside in the Redwoods and inside, as good as it gets.

Bring a delicious picnic including your favorite bottle of wine. Sit amongst the redwoods and be entertained by a the no less than excellent perfomances of your favorite Shakespeare.
Great for couples and friends, leave the kids home on this ride.
