Okay, it isn't the Ritz and you go to the window to order your food and pick it up, but everything we ate was incredibly delicious. And the recipes are quite unique. The ambiance was lively and interesting. The owner writes cookbooks, hooray, and hopefully we can recreate some of the wonderful dishes at home We would go back in a heartbeat.

We were visiting Santa Cruz and saw that India Joze got all 5's on its tripadvisor reviews, so we were expecting a great restaurant. It is anything but. If I were being charitable I would give it a 3, but in truth it deserves a 2. The food is billed as "eclectic world cuisine" but it is more on par with a university cafeteria. We ordered four items: dragon chicken (which was billed as Vietnamese), pakoras, a fatoush salad and a mango lassi. Starting with the best, the fatoush salad was good, but it was basically a caesar salad with artichoke and a few pieces of toasted pita bits. No one would ever confuse it with a fatoush salad. Next in order was the dragon chicken -- certainly never seen in Vietnam -- which was an extremely salty chicken and mushroom dish with a peanut sauce. The so-called pakoras were doughy and the mango lassi was simply awful. On top of the mediocre food, the place was dirty with flies all around and there were crumbs on the table from the previous customers. About the only good thing is that it is cheap. As with most things, you get what you pay for.

Great food, really everything is fantastic - well prepared, fresh, incredibly and intricately spiced. Great for take-out or a quick meal there, and you can order online.

India Joze is a Santa Cruz institution unique in the world. Being a Joze fan for over 30 years, I am thrilled to have it back. This 2010 incarnation of Joze is casual and informal, a place where you are likely to run into someone you know. It can get hectic when crowded. Chef Jozseph Schultz, a cultural treasure with hundreds of recipes at his fingertips, creates exceptional and delicious flavor combinations found nowhere else at an unbelievably affordable price. Most the dishes are available with your choice of chicken, fish, lamb or tofu, some, like the Gado-Gado, are purely vegetarian. Joze Dahl and his famous Joze Hashbrowns are a meal in themselves. The chai is house-made and great. The drinks, the desserts... all wonderful. Try everything on the menu, you can't go wrong.

The prices are reasonable; the food is outstanding. There is clearly a focused and skillful attention to all aspects of the experience. The atmosphere was friendly in general (for a first-timer like myself) as well as specifically (all kinds of people coming in and out who clearly knew each other, stopping for a moment to talk, and then ordering or heading back out again). But what do we want most in a restaurant? Great food by someone who can creatively imagine and present said food (often with pleasant surprises tossed in here and there). And Jozseph definitely makes that happen.
