We went on this train ride because my son, almost 3, is a die hard train fan. It was very chaotic at the beginning, the train whistled and everyone just started boarding wherever. No clear directions given even tho there was a man with a microphone. We got caught up in a field trip. We're forced off our train and onto another. People would not make room. The man talked the whole trip and I could probably only hear /understand about 10% of what he was saying. The train is slow and does "switchbacks" to make it up the hill. It's chilly, take your coats.
Not much to see but there are some tall trees.

Overall, ok for the kids but get yourself a good seat where you can maybe move an inch to turn and take pictures of your kids.

Had a great day at roaring camp and taking the steam train up the mountain was a very nice experience. Try to pick your visit carefully. The day I went Intel, the computer company had a corporate day, so the whole park was very busy.

This is really nice and beautiful into the redwood trees. The train is real and actually travels through downtown Santa Cruz. That is very fun. Beautiful scenery. Actually fun for all ages. Enjoy.

The grounds are very nice with a couple of duck ponds, picnic tables and some old-time buildings. We had come out the night before for a company party with a western band and barbecue. The band was wonderful, and the barbecue was AMAZING! Fall off the bone ribs, succulent chicken, beans, corn, salad and apple pie for dessert. It was very delish-all in the group of 70 were more than satisfied and pleased with the quality of both food and service. The steam train ride was fun-the cars are mostly open, with bench seating on right and left sides, but most of the ride is through shade of giant redwoods, so not to worry about cooking in the heat if you didn't wear a hat. The conductor gives a nice little lecture at the top of the hill, where the train stops for you to walk around or use the clean, modern restrooms. Very nice outing for families and older members of the group, as there is not much walking or strenuous activity.

A bit expensive but worth it for a one time visit. Train was fun and a nice view of redwoods. The sheriff and his dancing horse an extra treat
