We stayed here for one night about a year ago and I have to say it was a miserable experience. Mainly because of one very uncomfortable bed, dim lighting, and a general feeling that the place was neglected. But back to the bed - my spouse is a person who can sleep anywhere, anytime, on practically anything (plane, chair, whilst shopping, etc) and even he had trouble snoozing on this bed.

The hostess only showed up to get our credit card - after that she was MIA. Santa Cruz is a gorgeous place with lots to do - but I would stay away from The Darling.

In July 2005, my wife and I had to run up to Santa Cruz on some business. It was the Wednesday before the weekend we were to take the trip, so it was somewhat short notice. The area's hotels were rather full and we ended up contacting the Darling house. We were told that their policy was a two night minimum but they will do it this time for one night. So we booked a room for Saturday night and they took our credit card information. On Friday night at 9pm they called to tell us that another guest who was there for one night decided to book a second night so they are giving our room to her. Then they suggested a couple of hotels we could try in the area.

I wonder if it were we who cancelled at 9pm the night before if they would have charged us for the short notice cancellation, because we were told when we booked the room that their policy was reservations must be cancelled five days prior for a refund.

It may or may not be a nice place, but to find out I am not willing to risk "booking" a room there in the future.

We have stayed twice at the Darling House, and will go there again when we return to Santa Cruz. The 1910 house is charming with beveled glass windows, inlaid hardwood, antique furniture and most of the original plumbling and electrical fixtures. (Some guests may prefer shiny new stuff, but we loved the older atmosphere.) Our most recent room even had a chamber pot -- along with a computer hook-up. The dining room and living room have an ocean view, and the Board Walk is within easy walking distance.

On our first few visits to Santa Cruz, we stayed in motels, until we discovered the Darling House. The house is "darling," and the hosts made us feel completely at home. On a recent August weekend, we stayed two nights for $88 less than the cheapest motel we could find, and that included home-made breakfasts and fresh flowers in our room. We have recommended it to other family members.

This place was very expensive and not worth th money. The bed was so small that we had a miserable night. everything looks tired and in need of a face lift. The wood was beautiful, but the place was dark and overall depressing. I would not recommend.
