This is a first rate choice to take even young children to, perhaps before going to Monterey Aquarium. Lots of hands on tanks, easy to read displays, and friendly knowledgeable young staff.
Tables for picnics and paths to run and a whale skeleton.
Just north of Santa Cruz

small, mellow, touch tanks, good when you don't want the big Monterey thing, nice activity for kids on a rainy day, or have a picnic outside on a sunny day, can be really windy there

This little gem is peacefully tucked away. I'm not big into the science thing but I really enjoyed this visit. The docent led our tour and was engaging and easily taught me much about marine science in a short time. The touch-pools are great -- sea stars, anemones, swell sharks...

Visited the center on spring break with my 15 and 13 yo dtrs. Loads of interesting information on past and current research projects, as well as the ecology of the area. Makes you feel like you are getting a sneak peak of current research. Take the free docent led guided tour, we got to see the dolphins they were working with who were military trained bomb sniffers. Of note: they have the only fully intact whale skeleton, it is magnificent! Wear layers even if the sun is out, it's right on a cliff and if windy is very cold. Price is right too..check their website. Great for half day break from the beach and boardwalk.

It's on the smaller side but it was very educational. We got to touch a small shark, star fish and other small marine animals. Take the outdoors tour when you go!!
