Returned yesterday from our week-end at the Inn at Pasatiempo -- in Santa Cruz for a family event. First time back in the area for nearly 20 years after many years of summer vacations there from the 50's on.
The wide range of reviews (I read most of them from Terrible to Wonderful), I chalk up to the fact that this is not a chain hotel, in the slightest so may be misunderstood (expectations-wise). It is an old (maybe 50 years or so?) renovated motel/roadhouse on a mountain highway (which used to be 2 lanes, going into a beach community) which has been updated and well-maintained and crafted into the hotel center of a beautiful garden/mountain setting near the Pasatiempo Golf Course. It is not your typical golf course property, as we know golf course properties these days. This is "old Santa Cruz."
It's such a stunning location that someone could have knocked down this historic "inn" (motel/roadhouse) and put in something fancier and more 21st c., but it's part of mid-20th c. California history ---- so it's being maintained. Fortunately.
This hotel is unique, quaint and charming. It is not new and fancy, so anyone expecting a brand-new beach or golf resort (if there is a wedding or party there) will likely be disappointed unless they have their expectations in line. For what the Inn at Pasatiempo is? (and nothing more) --- it is delightful.
We had a standard king room. Linens were white with double-sheets and stacked pillows, just like any nice, fancy hotel these days. Welcoming first impression.
The bed was comfortable (not as good as home, but better than some hotels costing much more) and it was very clean. There was a good-sized bar-style refrigerator and a coffee pot and hair dryer. 27-in TV (not flat-screen) worked fine and there was the standard ironing board and plenty of good lighting for reading. The toiletries were very nice. Santa Cruz style. There were also TWO mirrors in the room (outside the bathroom), which is rare. Good for two people trying to get ready at the same time.
Although our unit was dated (it's a renovated vintage roadhouse/motel off a mountain highway) with old vinyl flooring in the small bath, it was nicely decorated with French country accents --- nightstands and a table/mirror and the TV armoire and French country headboard. There was a cute little white antique-looking storage unit in the bathroom. Nice touch. Also, we loved the look of the high wooden beamed ceilings.
We were greeted by Molly (the assistant manager) upon arriving at 3pm. Our assigned room wasn't ready as yet so she called to find another room for us. Very welcoming. Our room was off to the right, next to The Cottage. For reference, the rooms with the better location are off to the left of the lobby, nearer the golf course and closer to the Peachwood Restaurant and all the decks and beautiful grounds. We were happy with our location however, having reserved through a third-party.
The locale of the inn is stunning, in the Santa Cruz Mountains (yet close to the highway, for convenience). Very popular for weddings and events --- the gardens are so beautiful.
Unfortunately, we were there on a very rainy week-end so we were not able to tour the lovely grounds and some of our issues with the property had to do with the heavy rain on the (older) roof and having to use the antiquated wall heater, which was noisy. Also, the doors didn't seem well-insulated so every time anyone closed a door in our wing, we could hear the slam. Pow.
Even though we didn't get the best night sleep (due to the noise from the rain on the steeped roof and the old heater), we loved the property and are planning to return soon, to enjoy it in better weather.
We left town early, to get ahead of the weather, but topped off our week-end with a very nice Sunday brunch at the Peachwood Restaurant -- adjacent to the lobby. Not a huge selection but very good food and outstanding service and reasonably priced for what we got. We're used to paying $30 or so for a Sunday brunch with a huge selection. This was about $23 which seemed quite reasonable, in a tourist area, for the selection. Also, the brunch servers were the friendliest I've ever seen --- making sure everyone always had a fresh plate, more flatware, fresh coffee, mimosas, etc. Very nice experience.
We'll return soon and would recommend this facility to anyone who appreciates Americana (old restored lodging from the last century, such as nice restored places on Route 66) and doesn't expect a fancy upscale golf course resort. Clean, restored, cozy, quaint, well-maintained, friendly --- but not upscale or fancy, if you rent a standard room there. They do have some more upscale units on site (so we were told) but we just had a standard room.
