“Vintage charming roadhouse/hotel, in excellent location”
Reviewed January 31, 2011

Returned yesterday from our week-end at the Inn at Pasatiempo -- in Santa Cruz for a family event. First time back in the area for nearly 20 years after many years of summer vacations there from the 50's on.

The wide range of reviews (I read most of them from Terrible to Wonderful), I chalk up to the fact that this is not a chain hotel, in the slightest so may be misunderstood (expectations-wise). It is an old (maybe 50 years or so?) renovated motel/roadhouse on a mountain highway (which used to be 2 lanes, going into a beach community) which has been updated and well-maintained and crafted into the hotel center of a beautiful garden/mountain setting near the Pasatiempo Golf Course. It is not your typical golf course property, as we know golf course properties these days. This is "old Santa Cruz."

It's such a stunning location that someone could have knocked down this historic "inn" (motel/roadhouse) and put in something fancier and more 21st c., but it's part of mid-20th c. California history ---- so it's being maintained. Fortunately.

This hotel is unique, quaint and charming. It is not new and fancy, so anyone expecting a brand-new beach or golf resort (if there is a wedding or party there) will likely be disappointed unless they have their expectations in line. For what the Inn at Pasatiempo is? (and nothing more) --- it is delightful.

We had a standard king room. Linens were white with double-sheets and stacked pillows, just like any nice, fancy hotel these days. Welcoming first impression.

The bed was comfortable (not as good as home, but better than some hotels costing much more) and it was very clean. There was a good-sized bar-style refrigerator and a coffee pot and hair dryer. 27-in TV (not flat-screen) worked fine and there was the standard ironing board and plenty of good lighting for reading. The toiletries were very nice. Santa Cruz style. There were also TWO mirrors in the room (outside the bathroom), which is rare. Good for two people trying to get ready at the same time.

Although our unit was dated (it's a renovated vintage roadhouse/motel off a mountain highway) with old vinyl flooring in the small bath, it was nicely decorated with French country accents --- nightstands and a table/mirror and the TV armoire and French country headboard. There was a cute little white antique-looking storage unit in the bathroom. Nice touch. Also, we loved the look of the high wooden beamed ceilings.

We were greeted by Molly (the assistant manager) upon arriving at 3pm. Our assigned room wasn't ready as yet so she called to find another room for us. Very welcoming. Our room was off to the right, next to The Cottage. For reference, the rooms with the better location are off to the left of the lobby, nearer the golf course and closer to the Peachwood Restaurant and all the decks and beautiful grounds. We were happy with our location however, having reserved through a third-party.

The locale of the inn is stunning, in the Santa Cruz Mountains (yet close to the highway, for convenience). Very popular for weddings and events --- the gardens are so beautiful.

Unfortunately, we were there on a very rainy week-end so we were not able to tour the lovely grounds and some of our issues with the property had to do with the heavy rain on the (older) roof and having to use the antiquated wall heater, which was noisy. Also, the doors didn't seem well-insulated so every time anyone closed a door in our wing, we could hear the slam. Pow.

Even though we didn't get the best night sleep (due to the noise from the rain on the steeped roof and the old heater), we loved the property and are planning to return soon, to enjoy it in better weather.

We left town early, to get ahead of the weather, but topped off our week-end with a very nice Sunday brunch at the Peachwood Restaurant -- adjacent to the lobby. Not a huge selection but very good food and outstanding service and reasonably priced for what we got. We're used to paying $30 or so for a Sunday brunch with a huge selection. This was about $23 which seemed quite reasonable, in a tourist area, for the selection. Also, the brunch servers were the friendliest I've ever seen --- making sure everyone always had a fresh plate, more flatware, fresh coffee, mimosas, etc. Very nice experience.

We'll return soon and would recommend this facility to anyone who appreciates Americana (old restored lodging from the last century, such as nice restored places on Route 66) and doesn't expect a fancy upscale golf course resort. Clean, restored, cozy, quaint, well-maintained, friendly --- but not upscale or fancy, if you rent a standard room there. They do have some more upscale units on site (so we were told) but we just had a standard room.

I reserved this hotel with some doubts after reading mixed reviews. I chose it due to the reasonable price. We were very happy with our stay. While it is not as elegant as the website photos imply, it is certainly comfortable, clean, and pleasant. The staff was very nice. The continental breakfast was okay (danish, fruit, yogurt, coffee). The room was quite large, clean, and quiet. We were on the highway side of the property, and not bothered once by noise. In summary, we would definitely stay here again.

Well located. Great room. Clean. Spacious. Silent.
Great service. Nice person at the reception.
Outside heated swimming pool. Beautiful gardens. Apparently great restaurant (steakhouse) but we didn't get to try it.
Disappointing breakfast though (limited choice). Free parking.

I definitely did my research on finding a hotel in Santa Cruz to stay in, and Pasatiempo seemed to be the best "bang for the buck" as they say. It was a very easy check-in, the concierge was very friendly. When I walked into my hotel room, it was better than I expected. I read a lot of reviews, both good and bad, and from my experience, there was nothing wrong with the hotel at all. I went into thinking the worst for the hotel, but hoping for the best (especially since there were negative reviews because the hotel is considered to be older). The room was so clean and beautiful, definitely one of the nicer hotels I've ever been in, especially in that particular price range.

This hotel was close to everything we did! We stayed for 2 nights, enough time to check out Mystery Spot, get massages, walk up and down Pacific Ave. and play some pool, chill at the beach, zipline at Mount Hermon, and drive zip cars! I had so much fun, def. want to stay at this hotel again!

Once again, came to town to drop the kid off at UCSC. And again, Inn at Pasatiempo is the most conveniently located with very decent rooms. Maybe 10 minutes from the campus. The price does jump up quite a bit on the weekends ($134 or so for a queen w/AAA discount), but since I was there for only one night, it was worth it to me.

I originally had a queen size room reserved, but...opened the room door to the room and someone's belongings were there. Whoops! Thank goodness no one was in the room at the time with just a towel wrapped around their waist. Hah! The front desk set me up in a nice room with a king size bed. Very cool of them.

I decided to treat myself to room service, since I was without said child/kid/adult/college student. Mmm, Mmmm....can't say enough about the steak burger from Peachwood Steakhouse. One of the best. Good meat, good bread and delicious criss-cross fries. Quick delivery, too!

I'll be back!
