Loved this place. The staff was friendly and helpful. Free internet and wi-fi. Quiet rooms, large comfy beds, nice bathrooms. If you forgot toothpaste, they have it for you, complimentary. Good parking, and convenient to all, including UCSC. We did not have breakfast (free) but it looked decent. Coffeemaker in the room, just a nice experience.

We've always stayed at the Dream Inn, which is a class act, but about 2x as expensive. When all you are doing is sleeping there, save some money and stay at the HIE! Loved it!

Wow! I'm impressed with this place.

My sister lives in Santa Cruz and my family used to vacation here when I was a kid. I have stayed in many places around this area and have found this place to be the best value HANDS DOWN! And I've stayed in nice places like the Hilton Scotts Valley and the Casablanca.

This HIE has been open for 7 months, and thus is quite new and up to date. It offers amenities such as free wi-fi, breakfast, and a small business center where you can log in and print documents, sauna, exercise center and pool. There is plentiful parking, and it is located close to HWY 17.

SC has a big mold problem because of the dampness; the HIE does not have that problem because it is new and very clean. The room was good sized and comfy. It doesn't have the charm that some of the places on the beach have, but it also doesn't have the pricetag, the noise and is superclean. The rooms and common areas are attractive and nicely appointed.

We stayed here on Christmas night, and paid $109, which is pretty cheap for SC. We were blown away with the breakfast--there are bagels, toast, eggs, breakfast meat, cereal, coffee and juice. Nice breakfast, much better than standard continental. And it was included in the price.

The HIE is not really within walking distance to the beach; but I don't care about that. It is a quick 5 minute car ride to downtown or the beach. I'd rather take the money I've saved and use it to shop or eat dinner out and drive.

I stayed at the new Holiday Inn Express in Santa Cruz in December 2009 while visiting family in the area. It's a beautiful hotel. Very nicely furnished in the lobby, hallways, and guest rooms. Spotlessly clean. It's located right at the base of Highway 17 where it arrives in Santa Cruz.

I paid with "points" so cannot comment on the price.

My only complaint would be that the hotel feels "cramped". By that I mean that it's wedged onto a small lot; the driveway is tiny, like I would have felt unsafe navigating it in a large vehicle; the lobby area is very small (e.g., at breakfast time, you really can't even get between the tables without asking others to push their chairs in); the pool is wedged in between wings of the hotel with very little room on any side; the "business center" consisted of two desks with computers on them in between the elevators and front desk. Unfortunately, this seems to be the way that coastal cities in California do their urban planning nowadays...wedging new homes and new businesses on postage-stamp sized lots.

Aside from the slightly uncomfortable sensation of feeling "cramped" (the opposite of "roomy"), we were extremely satisfied with our stay and would definitely stay there again.

We stayed the weekend here and really liked it. It was new and clean and included breakfast. My only complaint would be the location, which could have been closer to the beach or downtown.

We chose this hotel based on the reviews on TripAdvisor. We stayed in the suites, which have spacious rooms and bathrooms, with a mini-fridge and microwave, a sofa-bed, two dressers and two TV sets in each room. Each room had an actual closet with real hangers--a touch I really appreciated. The hotel is at the edge of town, which was a good location for us, since we planned to visit the Roaring Camp railroad during our trip, and since relatives from Santa Clara were coming to meet us. If you're looking for a hotel within close walking distance of the beach, this isn't the place for you, since the walk is about two miles. But there's plenty of parking at the Boardwalk, and we appreciated being in the less-congested and quieter part of town. We parked in the underground parking garage, which had nice, roomy spaces. The reviewer who complained about tiny parking spaces must have parked in the above-ground garage, where spaces are indeed small. Free internet computers next to the lobby, a swimming pool, and free breakfasts were a plus--although we, like other reviewers, found the hot breakfast to be inedible. However, there was plenty to eat if you can be satisfied with a cold breakfast--cereal, yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, a variety of breads and beverages, and delicious cinnamon rolls.

We stayed here overnight on September 10th while we were visiting the coastal area of N. CA as part of a big Bay Area trip.

We found the hotel to be brand spanking new, with everything sparkling and shining. Breakfast was free, which was nice, but was a little limited. However, for the price, you can't complain.

The rooms were average size, but brand new, and the bathrooms were extremely spacious for a HI Express, with ultra modern lighting. The I-Pod docking station was a nice touch in the room.

If you are looking to get a good night's sleep or any sleep this is NOT the hotel to stay in!!!The walls of this hotel are thin! We checked out many hotels and decided the reviews for this hotel were good so we booked. What a terrible experience! The staff at this hotel Is VERY unprofessional and very immature!! Sometimes they do not even answer the phone at the front desk.
You will hear everything in your room...people walking in the halls, your neighboring rooms and especially the noisy little pool area. The small pool area is located in the middle of the hotel and the windows of the rooms look down into it. This area has a tunnel effect with echoing. While we were there the pool area was taken over by some very drunk parents and there screaming children. One of these drunk people decided to cannonball over and over into the pool to see how many windows he could splash water on. This was very unsafe!! BE ADVISED .. The staff does not monitor the pool area, although it is located directly behind the front desk. I was told by Laurie at the Front Desk that they do not have enough people on staff to monitor the pool and that the pool does not close until 10pm. I told her about the unsafe and loud situation at the pool area and that we could not sleep. Her response was that she had already received several complaints from other guests but the pool closes at 10pm. Then, I was told there was no manager on for the evening???!!! How can a hotel not have a manager on for every shift?? How unprofessional!!!
