When I told a friend about plans to visit Santa Cruz, I was warned that most of the hotels close to the boardwalk/wharf/waterfront are crummy and run-down. The Ocean Pacific Lodge is a definite exception to that rule! It's a very nice facility. As others have pointed out, the hotel has been renovating its rooms. The accommodations were simple but pretty and comfortable. We had a 3rd-floor room right above the pool and breakfast building -- so convenient! The pool area was nice -- two hot tubs and one regular pool -- all very clean. The front-desk employees were very friendly, and the office is so cute, decorated with a lot of posters and murals of the Woodie surfing cars famous in Santa Cruz. Parking in the lot was not difficult at all.

A few small drawbacks: The hotel subscribes to a limited range of Direct TV channels. There's nothing wrong with this in itself, but the confusing thing is that if you are flipping around channels to find something to watch, you keep getting to screens that say "Channel not paid for". So you can't really just flip from channel to channel and find something to watch. I don't think this is the fault of the hotel -- it's probably just how Direct TV is set up -- but it's slightly confusing.

The other thing is that even though this hotel is well-kept-up and feels safe, Santa Cruz seems to have a large population of street people, and you will encounter some of them when you walk from the hotel to the boardwalk/wharf/waterfront. We didn't encounter anyone who was drunk or belligerent in some way, but you should just have your wits about you as you walk around in this area. Unfortunately, I don't think there's any part of central Santa Cruz that's not like this. As I said, at least Ocean Pacific itself is a very nice facility, clean and safe.

I read the previous reviews from a few years ago saying that this hotel was dated, not clean, etc. Pay no attention to those old reviews as the Ocean Pacific Lodge has been renovated.
Our room was clean and freshly painted with very nice decor. The bathroom was large and had a beautifully tiled double shower and a vanity area in the bathroom separate from the sink.
The pool was clean and inviting and we enjoyed the two hottubs. The free breakfast with waffles was a plus. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated room near the pool.

Road-tripping down the coast, and other than bookend stays we had nothing planned in advance. Chose between this and the Torch Lite as a last minute, cheap stay. Best thing about the hotel was the great location; walking distance to downtown and the beach, far enough from the beach to avoid the pinch-points when driving around Santa Cruz.

Parking looked to be tight but we didn't have any problems. The rooms were good, looked like they were being touched up a bit so they are improving. Microwave and fridge, older TV. Everything was on par with my normal hotel/motel expectations, and the great location made this an excellent stay and value for the price.

This hotel really exceeded my expectations in every way! The location is convenient to shops, the boardwalk and the beach and yet it's very quiet. I noticed the rooms were very soundproof as one morning my neighbors were being pretty loud but I could only hear them when I left the room. The rooms are clean and well appointed with fridge, microwave, and even a small Keurig coffee pot. The continental breakfast is a nice touch when traveling with kids and teens. Not a great selection of items, but better than most continental breakfasts we've seen lately. The front desk staff proved to be helpful in many ways from recommending good restaurants to actually helping me book a sunset sailing cruise on the Chardonney II (Thanks to Chris at the front desk for that). Finally, I really appreciate a hotel that has clean, working guest laundry facilities. I would definitely stay here again and I highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a clean, convenient and friendly hotel in Santa Cruz.

Loved the attention to detail at this place. We only had time to stay one night. Great value. Nice decor-clean and green! Best in-room coffee-Newman's Own and a single serve Keurig. Just a really nice pleasant surprise. Staff was also really nice-they recommended some great places to eat. We've traveled a lot-whoever runs the place pays attention to the details. Wish we could have stayed longer!
