“Best Italian in Santa Cruz”
Reviewed July 24, 2012

We went to Lucio's on the advice of freinds while visiting my in-laws. Everything from the bread ot the salad to the Chicken Marsala was great. They offer a great twist on their pizzas and the basic Puttanesca was delicious. It was great seeing Lucio overseeing the operation. Its a bit noisy but that doesnt detract from the great food. Highly recommended. Buon Appetito!

“Great Italian Food”
Reviewed May 14, 2012

We recently ate at Cafe Lucio in Santa Cruz on a recommendation from the hotel we were staying at which was right across the street. The restaurant is a bit small and was packed for dinner when we arrived. The hostess sat us at the back of the restaurant, there were a total of 7 guests and the only table they had to fit us was in the back. The food was great, but a little over priced for what you get. The service could have been better, although our waitress tacked on the 18% gratuity to our bill so either way she was going to get her tip regardless of how good/bad the service was. It took a while to get our drinks (just water) and the bread, but after that the food came out pretty quickly and hot. The environment was a bit different- halfway though dinner the owner got up, turned on the fog machine, disco ball, and blared Micheal Jackson's greatest hits album! So come here for the food, not necessarily the service or the environment!

“BEST Italian place ever!!”
Reviewed January 12, 2012

My hubby and I escaped to Santa Cruz for a weekend getaway and happened to stay directly across the street from this place. While looking for somewhere to have lunch we walked across the street to Caffe Lucio. Although the place wasnt opened yet, we did run into the owner, Lucio, unloading his vehicle of fresh produce and meets. He greeted us and told us to come back for dinner. We arrived at the resturant about 7:30pm on Sat Night. The resturant was very cute, traditional italian but a very fun atmoshpere. I ordered the Chicken Marsala and my husband ordered a Peperroni pizza! I have to say, this was HANDS DOWN one of the best meals we have had. Everything was extremely fresh and so flaverful. While dining, Lucio noticed us and immediately came to our table to greet us. He talked and laughed with us for a short time asking about our meals and telling us a little about the history of his resturants. He is the nicest man and just made our dinner that much more special. Dessert was to die for! We ordered the Exotic Bocca (not sure if I have the name correct) which consisted of 3 fruits sorbets balled up with a coating of a White Chocalate shell around it, drizzled with dark chocalate. It was amazing! Prices are affordable and worth every penny. When we finished our meal, Lucio walked us out and thanked us for coming. Cannot wait to go back with the entire family! This is a definate every time we visit Santa Cruz! BRAVO Lucio!

“Watch the master perform!”

Lucio is a gem, but then it's his place. He was hurrying round, it was Christmas Day, wishing everyone Buen Natali (or something!) between cooking up some of the best food in town.

“This restaurant has great character and potential, but the chef is no longer the chef!”
Reviewed September 23, 2011

We went here on the recommendation of a chef/owner we met on our travels. The service is ok, and I thought the food was only average. The people I was with all liked theirs. I had a linguini and seafood dish, which tasted fine, but the seafood appeared to be from a bag of frozen seafood mix - small shrimp, tiny scallops, etc. Cutting a corner on quality like this made it slightly disappointing - I can make this dish at home! My husband had one of the stuffed pasta dishes and loved it. The chef/owner was sitting on the bar side of the exhibition kitchen - he did no cooking while we were there - just chatted up the patrons and drank wine. He eventually came over to our table and visited with us - he's pretty much of a kook and has a reputation as such. Harmless enough though. I think this place would be better if he was more hands on in the kitchen and hands off in the dining room.
